Excise tax and bring in new stuff ??
« on: March 19, 2004, 05:27:55 PM »
Hello,
Wer're going to be moving to Sheffield in June for my wife to start her PhD.  We'll be bring various personal effects including 3  computers (1 is provided by my employer as I will be telecommuting).  We'll be heading back to the US after her program is completed in 3 years and we'll be bringing all of our stuff home including the computers.  Does anyone know if we'll be liable for import excise tax if we are going to leave with our stuff?
Thanks,
A.

Personal household effects are not liable for any type of tax or duty. Just dont say if anything is new or not and dont carry reciepts. Dont know about the UK but US charges duty on items less than one year old. The main rule is just dont tell them how old an item is. Its not like they can tell by looking at it if its 10 months old or 13. In the UK? hang to the same rule just to be safe. But basically dont worry about tax. Tax is basically for items being imported to be sold or things like booze and cigarettes. Best people to ask are customs and excise if in doubt.
