I shipped mine.  We got a transformer to run it.  Best thing I ever did!  (well, one of the best things!)

Yeah, my sewing machine is running through a transformer, too. It was my sister-in-law's and it's a beautiful old tank of a machine that I just couldn't leave behind! Make sure you get a £30-40 transformer, though, and not one of the little $5 RadioShack ones (that couldn't even keep the light going).

Amen.  You want a transformer which really is a transformer, and not a cheap transformerless converter masquerading as one.

I assume mine will still work once I ship it to the UK, since it's a Victorian machine? :D  Hehehe no adapters necessary!  I'm thinking of giving my modern machine to my older brother for his cosplaying before I move.

I did the  same thing. My sewing maching was only two years old and I figured buying a transformer would be cheaper than getting a new machine all together.

Just a bit of info...
we're having a hell of a time finding a transformer.  We need a big-un for my kitchenaid mixer and food processer but everyone is sold out.  We've searched all over the web and all are out until October-which isn't too far away now but I've been looking since August!  Too many Brits going to the US to buy things cheap I think.

My husband went to some rinky dink electric shop and had one made. It was pretty cheap but weighs a ton!

yep we've been everywhere!  apparently from what we can figure out there is some sort of supply issue.  The websites will tell you they're in stock and will take your cc payment but a couple of days later we receive emails saying there's a problem/all out of stock.  It's really frustrating as I want to use my mixer!!  I suppose I should have put this in grievances and not on this post!!

If you don't have a specific brand that you have to have, then buying one in the UK would be better than buying one in the US and shipping it.  I found many nice sewing machines at charity shops for around £25-35.  So I don't feel it's really necessary to bring one with you if you don't already have it.

I read somewhere that it's a big selling item for Woolworths, and they have them for about £25

As an avid sewer, I'd very much recommend getting an older metal model rather than one of the new plastic machines. They really were built like tanks back then, for women who sewed all the time and not just curtains once a year... You don't need a huge variety of stitches, but you do want a sturdy, reliable machine, and in terms of sewing machines, nearly every vintage model is going to outperform a new sub-£100 model.

There's a ton of machine reviews on Pattern Review to check against, or there's a new database of vintage machines to look at, too.
