I won't eat any artificial sweeteners. Are they bad for you? Most likely. But, for me, the deciding factor is how absolutely disgusting they make food taste! BLECH! No, thank you!!

It isn't that difficult, though, to get by without buying/consuming products with artificial sweeteners. Maybe it's easier for me because I don't drink fizzy drinks - only water, juice or booze!  ;D

Same here.  Not a fizzy drink or flavored drink person at all.

The label reading part isn't difficult...just the unexpected things.  My husband loves his crisps...until he realised his sweet chili and prawn cocktail faves both have sweeteners...IN CRISPS!!!
my downfall IS drinks & juices...i drink loads of water too, but I like fizzy lemonade & cloudy lemonade.  they seem to be particularly difficult to find without the sweeteners.  guess i just need to move on to the booze then...lol

I couldn't agree more.  And I can definitely taste that fake crap.

I try to avoid them at all costs.
You can get agave nectar at Tescos-we use it to sweeten our oldest DD's porridge.  It is a syrup so when I make pancakes we use it instead of maple syrup for her (I try to keep her on low GI foods due to her rare syndrome).
I know it has been mentioned before, but Lidl and Waitrose has cloudy lemonade that does not have anything funky in it.  We don't drink fizzy drinks normally, but in the summer we do like a Pimms now and then.   :)
You have to be extra careful with labels on children's drinks.  I don't understand how they think artificial sweeteners are better for kids than sugar.

dude, anything that carries a label reading "this product may cause cancer in laboratory animals" is getting nowhere near my piehole.

i hate those things. i'm extremely sensitive to them, and i can taste them in anything. blech.  :-X :-X :-X

i'm one of those who will spend the extra couple of minutes reading labels (all vegetarians do this anyway), because it's worth it to avoid fake sweeteners.

The very last converstation I had with my uncle we were discussing artificial sweeteners and he said "get yourself some Splenda It's great!" Less than 6 months later he died of a brain tumor.  I hope it had nothing to do with the splenda because I still use it!

I used to be totally against anything with sweetners but had to lose some weight and as I am a sugar freak, I had to use sweetners.

Now, I'm so tuned into Splenda that regular sugar is too sweet and I can't stand it.

I try not to think too hard about what it may/may not do to me.

Oh no!  I though Splenda was going to be better than aspartame!!!  Now what do I do?

The minute I see "no added sugar" I run the other way.  That means instead of natural, normal sugars, they've probably added a bunch of nasty chemicals instead.  Ick ick ick.

Same here.  (Not vegetarian, though.)   I get so frustrated sometimes when trying to get a simple fruit juice - juice, not "drink" - when I'm thirsty.  They cost through the roof.

No chemicals for me either. What's the point of knowingly eating chemicals when there are perfectly good alternatives? I'm not as good a label reader as I probably should be, but we don't eat toooo many processed foods, so I think we're reasonably artificial sugar free.... DH uses Splenda in coffee and tea 'cause his dad died of diabetes and he went through a phase of being scared of sugar. I'm trying to get him off of it, but he claims to like the taste.... I suppose if I really liked soft drinks I might feel differently since they're so high calorie, but I'd rather have a full sugar Coke once a month than a diet Coke once a day.

I agree that artificial sweetners taste rank. I HATE that taste and get particularly cross when someone messes up my gin with slimline tonic.  >:( I bought a case of slimline by accident once and 95% of it is still sitting on a shelf gathering dust....

I looked for Agave Nectar once before with no luck (at Sainsbury) maybe I'll try Waitrose (I'm boycotting Tesco, so rather irritated to hear that they stock it).
