One classic novel
« on: September 02, 2007, 08:13:39 PM »
We were discussing with some friends last night what you would recommend to a person if they only had time to read one classic novel. Several of us said 'Middlemarch'. What would you recommend?

Huckleberry Finn - just picked one off the top of my head.

There really is no "one" novel that's better than every other.

Would Gone with the Wind be a classic?  I just finished reading it 5 minutes ago...love it.

I've always been a fan of F.Scott Fitzgerald, and in particular, The Great Gatsby. My mom read and reread Gone With the Wind many times when I was growing up.

My favorite modern classic is The Milagro Beanfield War.

I'll go for My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier if that counts as a classic.  Otherwise, the Mayor of Casterbridge by THomas Hardy.

I can't pick just one! My top three would be Middlemarch, Pride and Prejudice and Rebecca. But if I really really had to, I might agree with your friends and choose Middlemarch.

We were just discussing last night Watership Down and Of Mice and Men.  I never read Middlemarch so now I have another on my to do list.  So many books, so little time.

Great Expectations (Charles Dickens) is also an excellent book, as well as The Secret Garden, meant for both adults and children.

Wuthering Heights.

Pretty much my favourite book ever.
