Hoisin Sauce? :)
Kinda brown, and you have it with crispy duck, scallions, cucumber and pancakes?

duck sauce is a fruity sweet sauce. i can't remember the ingredients offhand, and i don't know of any other name that it would have over here.

i hadn't thought about it's absence until you mentioned it... now i kinda want some.

one thing i can't find are chow mein noodles -- the crispy ones. either in stores or with chinese food from restaurants.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Does it have quite a plummy flavour?  I think I know what you're talking about.

Hee, hee.  That was me when I was pregnant craving everything.  Richard came home with soya sauce and I nearly kicked him out!

They really don't have it here, it's so sad.  I love it too.  It's sad since my parents have giant bottles of it in their pantry.  I would bring some over if they were not glass bottles.

I believe the main ingredient is peaches.

The closest thing would be either hoisin sauce as MaryKate suggested or plum sauce.  Perhaps you could try a mixture of the two.
As for crunchy chow mien noodles I believe they are an American invention.  I lived in Southeast Asia for a number of years and never once saw them there.

That's like saying that half the 'Indian' dishes found in the UK must be found in India too ... because they're Indian. You would be amazed at how many dishes, and accompaniments, are made to cater for the country they're made in - duck sauce as we know it is almost definitely not Chinese ... although I will have a look in China Town the next time I'm there just to be sure!

I dont think duck sauce and plum sauce are similar in the slightest.  ???

In my opinion duck sauce is more like sweet chili sauce in both its taste and appearance.

If it's a genuine Chinese sauce then it can certainly be found int he UK...we have several of the oldest Chinese communities outside of China, with huge supermarkets and restaraunts, so it will just be a case of looking.

It may be a bastardisation though, and strictly American, as Angelini has suggested.  You don't find Chicken Tikka Masala in India, that's for sure!
