Allspice..
« on: September 08, 2007, 11:08:13 AM »
I can't seem to find it here.  Anyone know what's actually in it or any substitutes?

Thanks! :)

Yael, in our cupboard, we've got Allspice in the cupboard that we purchased here in the UK alongside the other spices (it's Schwartz brand).  Maybe try a different store?

Also I found this:

I've found allspice without a problem but I've had a hard time finding allspice berries.

Yes, the allspice we have is the ground one.  I imagine there must be some Caribbean food stalls here somewhere that would have the berries - London?  Brum?

I've got a bottle of Sainsbury's own brand ground Allspice in the cupboard and I think Carolyn's right - Schwartz makes one too.

I'm pretty sure our 'gourmet' deli (which has a great spice section) has the berries. It might take some searching, but I'm sure you can find them somewhere. It might mean trying small specialty shops.

what's in it?   ???

there's nothing 'in it'... it's just a dried berry/seed type thing (looks like a peppercorn), ground to a powder.

My mom thought for YEARS that allspice was a combo of different spices. I had to look it up in the dictionary for her, to show her that it was just ONE spice, from one plant.

I couldn't find allspice, so I bought mixed spice to make rugelach.  Anyone know if this will work okay?

They aren't the same at all. Allspice is more like pepper. It is a bit spicy and savoury. What is in the mixed spice that you bought?

Cinnamon, coriander seed, caraway, nutmeg, ginger and cloves.
