DVDs/Video Games
« on: September 10, 2007, 03:51:04 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a restriction on bringing DVDs/video games through customs in your luggage? I don't know if I'm going crazy or what, but I could've sworn I heard something about it technically being "importing" and having to pay on them, or getting hassled about it? Between my DVDs and PS2 games (I have means of playing both in the UK, so that's not an issue) I have about 60-70+ discs. That's a lot :-\ Maybe I should ship them? But I'm not sure which way would be best to ship them. How did you guys move DVD/Game collections?

You can bring them in your luggage as long as they are your own personal items. The issues with importing and paying customs duties on them arise when you are ordering them from the US, but having them shipped to you in the UK (i.e. using international delivery on Amazon.com).

However, you should only bring them with you if you will have a DVD/video game player that they will run on. At least for DVD's and video tapes, UK DVD players and VCR's won't play US discs/tapes because they are of a different region (US is region 1, UK is region2)/format (US is NTSC, UK is PAL for video tapes). You can buy multiregional DVD players in the UK which will play any DVD, but if you will only have a region 2 player in the UK, there will be no point in bringing your DVD collection as you won't be able to watch them.

You can get codes online for most UK dvd players to become multi-regional.  We did that as I brought several of my favorite dvds with me and they play on a UK dvd player as well as UK dvds.  Just a thought, the internet is a wonderful resource, it saves time and money.

Yup, he has a multiregion DVD player, I'll have my laptop, and he has a VCR that plays US tapes...but I don't plan on bringing any videos, anyway. His tv plays it all fine, too--we've done it before :)

How are you doing the PS2?  I was going to leave mine here because I figured it was hopeless to try to hook it up to the UK sets.  If there is a way to do it that doesn't involve shipping a US TV over there, I need hints and tips!
