Moving to Norwich soon
« on: September 19, 2007, 02:31:51 AM »
My family is soon moving to Norwich, UK from Portland, OR.   I've never been there but my husband just visited and assures me it's a lovely town. Anyone live there now?

We have an 8 month old daughter.  He'll be working at the U of East Anglia and I'll look for work as a secondary science teacher after I get my credentials verified.  We don't have a place yet and right now are main concern is how to ship our stuff over.  We don't have much, but the cheapest shipping company quoted us 10.64/cu ft.  Does anyone know of anyone cheaper but still reliable?

Thank you!  You're help is much appreciated!

Alicia

Welcome Alicia.

I suggest you post your question in the moving section of the forum, many more people are likely to see it there.  You might also want to search the section, I know there are a few people that are moving over now and have posted the same sort of question.

Best of luck with the move.

Welcome!  I've lived in Norwich for a few years now and really like it.  Can't help with the moving question since I only shipped books, but it's a question asked frequently, so you should get some helpful answers in the moving forum.  Good luck with your move!

Hi & welcome Alicia!

Sorry, I'm of no help - I brought most of my stuff over in extra suitcases.  Anyhow, good luck with the move!

Hi!  I have recently relocated from the States after marrying an Englishman.  We live in Oldbury in the West Midlands.  I just recieved my items and shipped only boxes...my husband knows the specifics more than I...but it was through UPackWe Ship.  It was quite reasonable and we drove to Manchester to retrieve it.  The boxes were a bit banged up...but no damage to anything.  It also came quicker than we expected.  No problems...they sort the customs and all for you.  The only inconvenience was having to drive the shipment into Chicago to ship.  (I was in Upper Michigan) we flew out of Chicago anyway... not so bad.  I assume they may ship from Portland?  I used to live in Portland and Metro areas.  LOVED IT!  DH and I plan to return within 2-3 years.
I blabbered on didn't i?!  Sorry!!!  Good Luck!!  If I can help with any moving advice or ins/outs  let me know!      Jules

It seems that a lot of UK-Y members are moving to Norwich just lately!   The signs do proclaim it to be "A Fine City."   :)

I'm about 20 miles away on the coast.  Here are some ZIP files of photos I snapped around the city a few weeks ago:

If you're not shipping big stuff, just some boxes, check into UPS and FedEx. We paid $3/pound, including insurance, to ship 10 boxes over with UPS. Everything was here in less than two weeks. Both of us are American, and since we only shipped essential stuff we needed it here quickly.

Hi Alicia,
When will you be there? I'll be visiting there for a day, maybe two in November, with another AmeExpat, maybe we could all meet? She's been there for a while and might be able to help you out.

Thank you, everyone, for the welcome and well wishes!  We've just received my husbands' WP so now we're ready to apply for our visas.  We're hoping to arrive in the UK by Nov. 7th, but that depends how quickly we can get our visas.  I'm crossing my fingers that it will be smooth and timely.  :-\\\\
