Stylish non-granny shoes to accomodate orthotics?
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:47:31 PM »
Becky's hurty-feet thread (and the wonderful, helpful replies) has inspired me to start my own 'foot woe' thread! I need some help!!

I have flat feet. VERY VERY flat feet. I walk 4-6 miles a day and work on my feet. Needless to say, my feet hurt - alot.

I have been seeing a great podiatrist/biomechanics specialist on the NHS for about a year. She has given me custom orthotics which I must wear 90% of the time - I am allowed the odd Saturday night out in real girlie shoes.

However, for day to day wear, I am finding it IMPOSSIBLE to find smart stylish shoes to accomodate my inserts - the problem is, I need shoes with removable insoles and a strap. I have tried Scholl's, Ecco, Clark's, Hush Puppies....in fact, I have been to EVERY SINGLE shoe store in Edinburgh (and beyond!), and haven't gotten lucky!! Zappos.com has a category for 'removable insoles', and I'm actually willing to order online provided there is a good returns policy...but even the almighty Zappos doesn't really have any attractive shoes with removable insoles!!

I am not a 'trainer' kind of girl. And my workplace frowns on trainer or 'walking boot' wearing. Even so, I have found I am pretty much STUCK with my high-top Converse All-stars. I have a black pair that I can juuuuuust about get away with at work. And I have 3 other colours that I wear on the weekends. This is the sum total of suitable footwear I have found that I can wear with my insoles. It is very very hard trying to act the part of a serious professional adult when you're wearing the poster footwear for skanky teenage angst.

I broke down in tears at a shoe store in Toronto the other week - the 8th we had visited that day, with no success. My poor, patient, long-suffering DH!

Help! Honestly....HELP! This is driving me crazy. I'm 31, ffs...I'm too young to wear shoes like these:http://www.dbshoes.co.uk/orthotic.html. All I want is a pair of nice Mary Janes that I can wear to work and not feel like a prepubescent slacker or a 90 year old women with gout... Apparently that is too much to ask :(
Ok, so I'm smug.

Does your podiatrist have any suggestions? I used to have orthotics and I wore them mostly in a pair of Sketchers suede lace up shoes - the style was a bit Dr Marten-ish - and this was the 90s. I didn't have to remove any insole in the shoe, though. And my orthotics were quite deep. Dr Marten does make a maryjane. Have you tried them?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yeah, my podiatrist gave me a catalog for the GRANNIEST shoes I have ever seen!!

I have tried two pairs of Doc Marten mary janes...both have removable insoles, but both have a really really hard edge on the heel cup, and have rendered me bloody on more than one occasion.

Actually, I have a pair of knee-high Doc Martens boots that do accommodate my insoles. Now that winter is coming, I can switch to my winter uniform of Doc Marten boots and knee-length skirt.  :-\\\\ But I really do need some more options.
Ok, so I'm smug.

I have the bloody heel problem, too. Sometimes the Dr Scholls mole skin helps with that. And a thick pair of socks! I wonder if a good cobbler could come up with a suggestion to soften the heel cup?

The back of the heel is where I'm most prone to blisters, so I feel your pain. Blister plasters (Compeed is the brand I've used) are awesome. Much better than moleskin, in my experience.

Cool, thanks...I'll try the blister plasters. Moleskin didn't seem to help at all.

I already got rid of my Dr Marten mary janes anyways...they aren't exactly the style I'm looking for. Still a bit too clunky and granny looking for me, I'm afraid.  :-\\\\
