Top 20 Worst places to live in the UK....
« on: October 15, 2007, 06:24:56 PM »
Hiya

They always start with the bad stuff first! the top 20 'best' places in the UK is apparently being announced Wednesday this week...

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20071015/tuk-middlesbrough-is-worst-place-to-live-45dbed5.html

Well, can't say I've been to m'boro - closest I got to was (yet another!) alcohol haze induced time in Newcastle! - but according to this survey it's the worst in the UK.

I had a feeling that quite a bit of East London would be mentioned and it takes a quarter of these top 20!

Roll on Wednesday, I want to see the top 20 best places... !

Any comments on these worst ones ?
Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Ha ha!  Good ole Middlesbrough - it always makes the top five.  I think Middlesbrough & Hull keep switching back & forth for the top spot each year, actually. :P

I lived in Middlesbrough for six months and really didn't like it there.

BUT, based on the way some people on UKY describe the cities where they live, I'm starting to think that Middlesbrough just has a bad reputation (and is therefore always given a place on the "worst" lists as a matter of course) and isn't actually one of the worst places to live.   :-\\\\

And I am up for a job in Manchester.  Woo for possibly living in the 17th worst place to live in the UK right after arriving in the UK.  :P

 ;D

The DJ on BBC Tees was all up in arms about this while I was out running errands this afternoon - seems like he's not the only one, either.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/tees/content/articles/2007/10/15/rubbish_boro_feature.shtml

I lived in M'bro for six months; DH lived there for nearly 28 years (he spent three years in Oxford for uni).  My FIL still lives in the same house Chris grew up in.  Sure, there are less savory bits of the Boro...but there are nice bits, too.  Just like everywhere else.  :)

BUT, based on the way some people on UKY describe the cities where they live, I'm starting to think that Middlesbrough just has a bad reputation (and is therefore always given a place on the "worst" lists as a matter of course) and isn't actually one of the worst places to live.   :-\\\\

I think you're right, Lola.  The thing about M'bro, and Teesside in general, is that people from the area will be the first to mock it, but at the same time, most of them have such pride in being from Teesside.

#7 Islington ? ? ? ? ?

I can't figure that one out?  A fairly nice part of town that a lot of younger people like to live in as well as some pretty wealthy people I know.

Good restaurants, fun pubs, good shops.  Strange

Glad to see I'm not the only one who really hated living in Nottingham.   :P

A friend of mine moved out of Manchester to Sheffield because of the gun crime.
What kind of job are you looking for anyway Dar?   ???

I dont hold a lot of stock in these lists.

I've lived in a place that's come out in the tops of these lists many times and for us it was anywhere but.

It's all about what's important to you and often enough, the size of your budget.

Manchester is a great place to live if you know the areas to avoid....

DH got his masters degree there.  Funnily enough, he's not taken me 'up the Boro' to any of his old haunts. ??? ;)

I really want to go on the transporter bridge though!  (And we've heard they are trying to revitalise things in the town centre a bit since he was there - graduated 1996.)
