chorizo paste/mince

Californians, I'm sure, will remember this stuff.
I've been away from CA for too long to remember with any clarity, but i vaguely recall that chorizo, as we knew it, was like a mushy mince or paste, packed in a plastic tray.  Not a dried hard sausage in a skin.

I was in Lupe Pintos the other day, and found a little plastic pack in their refrigerated section called sobrasada de mallorca... it's a spicy sausage paste, and it looks like the same stuff i remember as chorizo growing up, albeit a Spanish brand instead of Mexican.

I havent tried it yet... looking forward to stirring it into some scrambled eggs very soon!

I've also found a chorizo link sausage at M&S before (along with the other premium sausages there) that's wet (not dry/hard) chorizo.  Not sure how it would compare to what you remember?  Not sure M&S are still selling it either?

It's not quite the same as what you are thinking about in the USA, but sobrasada is lovely all the same!

Oh yeah!  I remember sobrasada from our last long holiday in Spain!  You could get tostada (toast) with sobrasada smeared on it for breakfast at some places & Steve had it although it didn't sound appealing to me.  Pork fat product smeared on toast - mmmm-mmmm! ;) :)

Now that I know a little better what it is - I might try it next time!

I've found wet chorizo in a skin before, but it wasnt the same as the mushy stuff we used to get in CA.

So... this sobrasada stuff isnt the same either?
Bummer...  oh well, it wont go to waste!   I like fat!  ;D

It might still make a good substitute - you never know until you try!

so... see the sobrasada as it sits in the plastic tub you bought it in?  Is it raw or cooked?   When the Mallorcans spread this stuff on toast, do they just spread it straight from the tub, or ...?

It is cured... so you should be able to just spread it on toast.  It's really yummy in eggs and also on a pizza crust too...

We had the sobrasada stirred into scrambled egg last night, and DH loved it.   I thought it was pretty good too, although, as you all warned me, it's not exactly what i was expecting.

Still really good stuff, though, and i would buy it again!   Good ol' Lupe Pintos!  :)
