Crab Rangoon - can you get it anywhere?
« on: November 03, 2007, 10:06:50 PM »
I've even looked for wonton wrappers to make my own, and had no luck. Anyone found them anywhere?

Wonton wrappers are fairly easy to find, look in the freezer section at any Japanese-Chinese-Thai grocery store.  (Although my Chinese friends keep telling me off for not making my own, Japanese people tend to just buy them, and so do I.)

Crab rangoon is new to me, but I looked up the ingredients and it sounds easy enough.

Now I want to make gyoza!

If you follow this thread, it's been discussed here. (Go to page four of the thread.) Some people posted recipes for the crab ragoon, and sauces to go with! Wonder if you could use a samosa wrapper, they are EVERYWHERE.

Never heard of it. Asked the wife (from Rangoon), never heard of it either.

It is most certainly an invention of the Western world. Cheese and milk are not common staples in Burma. You can find basic cheese in the western shops but cream cheese in Burma? Never saw it the whole time I lived there.

Sounds a tasty enough dish though. But what is artificial crab meat?

Wonton wrappers (sounds like a Kowloon hip hop group) can be found in any Chinese grocers. I think I have seen them in the supermarkets as well.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Yes, I think crab rangoons are totally an American thang & probably not very healthy (being deep fried) -- maybe they should become a Scottish thing?!! :)  But soooo yummy!  It's been years since I had a crab rangoon. :(

I only ever had them when I lived in R.I., maybe they are a New England thing?  My roommate used to make them, but she was Cuban. Ahhhhhh.

I am not a big fan of Chinese food though, so I probably wouldn't have noticed if they are someplace else.

I've eaten them at most of the Chinese restaurants I've been to in the US -- from Kansas to Florida.  I expect they're pretty much all over the US, but I could be wrong. :)

I've seen deep friend wun tun on the menu at our local Chinese takeaway, but I'd think its probably made with shrimp.

So, I'm assuming you can at least get the wrappers here.  Isn't crab rangoon made with cream cheese or something?

yes you can get wrappers here.

The recipe I googled stated cream cheese, hence my statement that it is probably not an Asian invention...

-- maybe they should become a Scottish thing?!! :)

Probably find it was a weegie that invented it.

Speaking of deep fried, ever had a pizza crunchie? DD came home the other night with one.
Pizza dipped in batter and deep fried.
Could I have a deep fried Mars bar to go with that?

Oh a DIET coke please.  ;D

I know. It works too. The nice lady at Wendy's told me.  ;)

I was acting 'Mercan'. It used to crack me up at the fast food places and people would order like 3K worth of food and then say diet coke please.
