Take the good with the bad...
« on: November 12, 2007, 03:07:41 PM »
In a span of 5 minutes I have had exciting news....

We finally exchanged and will complete/move on Friday the 23rd!

And....

My current landlord is going back on his word to let us out of the lease early if we agreed to pay agent fees and a new tenant was found.  Sounds fair enough right, we weren't asking to be let out of the lease completely.  Now he says nov/dec isn't a good time to list the property so we have to stay until the end of our tenancy, which is Feb 3.  I don't care about the money that much, we budgeted for this scenario as a worst case.  It's the fact that 5 months ago when I first told him that we were looking to buy and asked what are options were with the lease he told me it was no problem, as long as we found a new tenant.

I am going to call him tomorrow when I calm down, but I am afraid if I call him today I will start screaming or crying!

Congratulations for the first bit of news!!!  ;D

As for the second bit, yes, I think calming down and then phoning him tomorrow is a good idea. It's pretty sneaky of him to go back on his word like that.

YAY KARIN!!! Congrats dear!!!

Yes, I agree with your idea of just phoning tomorrow.  If it were me I would state that I was unhappy with his going back on his word - even if it didn't get me anything, at least I'd feel like I made my feelings known.

Congratulations on your move! (I am moving in a few weeks as well--although to another rented property that is much cheaper--so I will join in your excitement). That is pretty sneaky of your landlord to change his mind even though you gave him more than enough notice about your move.

Yay!

And I totally agree with Chary.  It just sucks, good thing you budgeted though.

Congrats! Hope you get through to your landlord. Is a short term sublet out of the question?

Congratulations for the buy!  It is a crazy thing isn't it?  And good luck with the landlord.  He's being unreasonable - as long as you find a tenent then who cares?  You keep paying until you do - he doesn't lose out!

Congratulations!  I hope you're staying somewhere around here!

WRT your current contract, it's wierd that there is no one or two month get out clause in the contract.  That is very restrictive if not, and may not be enforcable.

It was very difficult for us to get this with any of the potential landlords we dealt with (we ended up trying to do a contract with 3 different ones before we got this one). One didn't want a break clause at all and the other 2 would only do a "business" break clause: after 6 months we can give 60 days notice for any business reason. I was under the impression before that point that a break clause was common but in my actual experience it didn't seem to be.

Congratulations & good luck with the move!

I hope he'll be willing to work on a better compromise or you get him to keep his word on the lease!   :-\\\\
