Stuffing?
« on: November 13, 2007, 01:19:35 PM »
Please tell me - so that I can report back to poncy DH - that there is nothing wrong with 'bread' stuffing!!!  Apparently, (according to him, of course!) in the UK, it's made with breadcrumbs and not bread cubes and if I served my version to his family that I've invited to MY traditional Thanksgiving they will not like it because it's "just bread". ::)

Well IMHO, bread stuffing can be really, really nice.  Just don't tell them what it's made from and they won't question it.

You know, the thing is, I don't think they will question it!  At all!  I think it's just him being stupid and affected.  And if they don't like it, they don't have to eat it, there will be plenty of other food.  I don't love everything his mother puts in front of me!

OK, vent over. Thanks for your input!

I'm a sausage meat/breadcrumbs stuffing girl.  I have perfected my recipe over the years and I really don't like to have anything else.  It just doesn't seem 'right'.  But, the first year I cooked a turkey here, I couldnt' find sausage meat (october) so I made a bread stuffing.  It was fabulous!  I was so surprised at how good it was.  So now, I do bread stuffing for Thanksgiving and Sausage stuffing for Christmas.

That's my opinion.  If you don't like it no one is forcing you to eat it.  I doubt anyone will waste away from lack of stuffing.  Unless, of course, your DH is really a teddy bear.   :)

Besides the U.S. version has spices and other stuff in there, which is why I am not a fan.  How do you make stuffing with crumbs, wouldn't it all just fall apart?

I kind of prefer Stove Top to British stuffing but both are fine.
But you havent lived until you have had my stepmum's mum's Puerto Rican meat stuffing. It is divine and a meal unto itself.
Its made with basically ground beef, peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, raisins and lashings of Sofrito by Goya. Muy Bien!

I think by ''crumbs'' she means Oxo stuffing that you bake in the oven?

I mix my stuffing with sausage meat, eggs, onions, garlic, herbs and spices and then I mix in enough bread crumbs to give it a good consistency.  the crumbs expand in with the drippings of the turkey and it comes out in a nice 'lump'.  You can even slice it cold.

No, really, "they" (whoever that is!!!) use breadcrumbs.  Similar to MrsPink's, I think - there's lots of 'wet' ingredients, the breadcrumbs are used to hold it all together.

I didn't find the stuffing I had for Christmas to be all that different from US stuffing.  My family tradition is to chop up pecans in the stuffing.  I'm telling you, it really adds something special!!  You have to hunt for pecans here, but I found some at Tesco.

-now I'm craving pumpkin and pecan pie and turkey!

My MIL uses Oxo its bleh!   [smiley=puke.gif]  (Sorry.)

Make the stuffing you want this is your holiday - they're coming to celebrate it with you the way you'd like.   ;D

If your DH wants his own "special" stuffing tell him to go and make it himself - or make a small amount just for him.  My Great Aunt was the potato salad maker of the family (tubs of the stuff for one picnic), but she'd make a small dish of potato salad with no mayo or other stuff taken out for my grandpa because of his diet so he could still have some...   :-\\\\

I don't think I understand what you mean by 'bread stuffing'. Isn't it all made with bread crumbs?? That's the only way I've ever made stuffing in either the US or the UK: bread crumbs, egg, butter, onion, sage, parsley and salt & pepper.

There are two kinds of bread crumbs - dry and finely crumbed or loose which is essentially bread cubes.  Bread stuffing is usually made with bread cubes.
