NY hotel deals
« on: November 14, 2007, 04:14:43 PM »
Hi all.

I am going home at the end of January beginning of February to NY for about a week or so. The bf and I never seem to get away from the family and he really wants to do NYC right. Since I never had to stay in NY before I don't know what's good, inexpensive, quietish, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions of where/who to book with online as well as what are nice hotels? I don't want to end up in a bad one as I am not too familiar. I know areas but not accomodations, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

I've stayed here:
http://chelseainn.com/

Close to a lot of stuff, cheap, fitted out with cooking gear.  We picked a cheap suite with shared bathroom, but they have other options.  Don't confuse it with the Chelsea Hotel...

It's close enough to walk to Washington Square, and our friends stayed here:

OK, so, any idea what area you would like to be in?  Here are a few places to start you on.  Rich and I like to stay in the city for a night or two while we visit my parents and we have stayed in the following:

First and foremost, DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!

http://deals.hotels.com/pageDetails.do?&destinationId=572B0850-4E3F-469B-87B2-C17ED3EA049B&hotelId=142043&arrivalDate=29/01/2008&departureDate=03/02/2008&numberOfRooms=1&adultsPerRoom=2&childrenPerRoom=0

I LOVE the Upper West Side and this one is newish and right near the park.

Another UWS hotel, right near Central Park, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Fifth Ave Shopping.

Not the best location, but a nice hotel:

This is where we stayed after our wedding and I loved it.  Best breakfast in NYC is downstairs at Norma's.  Nice location as well.

Also, as a rule I stay away from Times Square.  Fun to walk around, not so much to stay near.

I like the looks of the Hudson!  I also like the price of the first hotel, 58 bucks/night?!?  How bad was it?  I mean, if you don't pick up crabs or get bitten by bedbugs... that's fine by me!

I love the bar at the Hudson, it's so nice!!!!  The rooms are tiny though.

BEDBUGS!!!!  Shall I say more?  Oh and just to clarify, I have not stayed there myself, but I know plenty of people who have.  Plus, it used to be on the news every week!

Wah!  I guess you could book the room for a week, use the first day to de-bug it while staying somewhere else... and insist on washing your own bedding for the rest of the time.

Well, that sounds like something I'd do to save a few bucks... but I've slept in the car rather than pay for 'overpriced' places.  Like Hojo's.

Cheers for the help. I have heard MORE than my fair share about the one across from Penn Station. It's not a place I want to go near rather than to walk by to go to Jack's World (my favorite dollar store) I am intrigued about the Chelsea Inn. I know I've heard something in the past about it. I hope it was good

Isn't that THE chelsea hotel though? I didn't think there was another. I have always known what I am seeing on that site as the Sid and Nancy hotel. Sorry me and my punk roots talking. Maybe I'm confusing it but seriously I've walked past that neon sign over and over and didn't think there was another. Have you stayed there?

The Chelsea Hotel is the famous one.  I stayed at the much cheaper non-famous Chelsea Inn.

Ooh, must find link to Leonard Cohen song 'Chelsea Hotel'... I don't think there are any songs about the Chelsea Inn, unless I start writing one.  Part of it will have to be "don't fall out the window, it's a long way down, and there's no way out I can see"...

I just have to step in and defend my beloved Chelsea Hotel. I've stayed there, known people who lived there, and worked across the street from there. It's a nice, albeit offbeat, little place. The rooms are all different, but all clean and well-kept. The staff varies from friendly to just plain weird depending on who's on shift. Then halls are full of original art, some of which is from very well-known artists. When you stay there, you can walk around the halls and see the doors that various musicians painted when they lived there.

And the restaurants on 23rd between 7th and 8th are great. On 7th, Fast Wok is one of the best cheap-ass Chinese places in town. If you go towards Broadway on 23rd, you get the Comfort Diner, which is awesome comfort food. El Quixote is great for tapas and drinks at the bar after a late night at work. The list goes on. There's pretty much anything you could want within a few blocks.

There are some boutique hotels in the stretch between Washington Square and Chelsea, but they usually book up really early. Can't remember the names of them, though.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

I LOVE the Comfort Diner, best Pancakes in Manhattan!  They closed the one on the Upper East Side near where I lived and I was so sad.  I went there almost every weekend and some weeknights.

No need to defend the Chelsea. I just know when it was older, although had and still does character, you wouldn't choose it to stay. So it's safe to say it's a relatively good place to stay then? It's my first choice.

In terms of eateries, shopping, etc....know it all well. Lived and worked in Manhattan for many years and lived just outside for the rest until I came here so although I want and appreciate the spots to go, I know em' well. Hotels on the other hand are difficult as I never     had reason to stay

Yeah it seems to have come a long way and the character and charm of the place overrides anything else. Problem is, my plans are changed to beginning of March and it seems they might be booked :(
