In need of some advice please
« on: November 21, 2007, 08:26:07 PM »
DF and I have decided to have a wedding ... and set a date for the end of March. I'm very excited...I know he's the one! We've agreed on a small wedding (only 110 or so because I have a HUGE family) but we still want it to be formal.

That being said... my real dilemma.

I'm not a real girlie girl... and I haven't picked up a fashion magazine since my schoolwork (20 years ago) required me to cut things out for different projects. Now, suddenly, Ms. Jeans-tshirt has to find herself a wedding gown, which I honestly never expected to happen.

So, I go out with my SIL and one of my nieces...we finally find a bridal shop that is still open and doesn't require appointments, and I hastily try on 6 different gowns. I'm a bit uncomfortable what with getting undressed in front of others, but I somehow managed to get through it. There was one dress that they loved and I really liked, but I decided to wait...why buy the first one that looks ok right? They wanted me to buy it I know, but it's my dress...not theirs.

I have since (on my own) gone to David's bridal twice to try different dresses...and still I had not found anything (trying not to spend $700). Today I went to yet another boutique near to my work ... and lo and behold, I try on 3 dresses and LOVE them all! All 3 of course, are discontinued models, and they are the only ones left in my size... the third one well, I almost didn't want to take it off. It's just so pretty, and flattering to my (motherly) figure...I got so wrapped up that I walked right up and bought it.

Now I'm geeked...called my sister and told her...big huge smile on my face, which wouldn't go away if I tried...until........... she asked me what color. It's Ivory, that's ok right? Noooooooooooo..... DF's only request is that he gets to wear the tux with the black pants and the white jacket. Can't really wear Ivory with white can you? I was/am devestated! I finally found one that I love, and like a dope, it won't match what he wants to wear. What should I do? My sis says to ask him to wear black or an Ivory jacket...but that's not fair to him. It's his day too after all. Has anyone ever seen or had a wedding where the bride was in Ivory and the groom in white? Did it look ok? Is there a way to tie the two colors together somehow? Of course there is "No Return" on my dress...it wasn't that expensive, but still money hard to part with with everything coming up so quickly.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This is going to sound horrid...and I know everyone will say I have no fashion sense...but given that you are a jean and t-shirt person...would it really be a mortal sin not to be completely colour coordinated?

To me it doesn't sound horrid at all. He is actually more into "fashion" if you will then I am, but I almost see the two colors clashing, and I don't want that either. I have looked online and haven't found any pictures or anything that would show them side by side, so I'm really just guessing.

The "rule" is that the groom's jacket and/or vest should be the same colour as the bride's dress.  The only exception is the groom's shirt -- it should always be white, never ivory.

My dress was candle lit ivory and my hubby wore a white shirt, and you know what you can't even tell.  I say keep the dress, I will send you some of my wedding pics if you want and you can see if it look horrid.

Go for it girl!  Who says you can't put ivory and white together, some bridal magazine?  Eff 'em.  It's YOUR day (well, HIS too), do what you want!  You found the dress that makes you feel good, he has the suit that makes him feel good - you'll look great together!
FYI....I'm not vain, this is meaning of my last name :)

i'd be willing to bet that if you got him an ivory jacket, he wouldn't know the difference between ivory and white!   Most men i know wouldn't, anyway!  ;)

You took the words right out of my mouth, Q-G! Hahaha, it's true. He probably won't even notice. And if he does, oh well! I don't think white and ivory would be too clashy.

Also. If he does notice, consider yourself lucky. Dave can't tell the difference between green and purple. -_-
It was most definitely...a THING.

Some of the wedding pics are in the gallery, my hubby had a black jacket and trousers with a white shirt and a red tie....I think that white/ivory/or black jacket as long as you look good (and feel it) that is doesn't matter....honestly it will be something you won't remeber and if you do it will be something you will laugh at.

Everything should be fine.  Ivory & white are minor color differences, its just if its a really really deep ivory that you may be concerned...

Do you have a fabric swatch from your dress that you could use to compare next to the coat he wants?  That way you can see & visualize what it'll look like...    ;)

Congrats & good luck!

Thank you all for the suggestions and opinions. I put my dress up to the VERY white bag last night, and it's really not that noticeable. He said he doesn't care if we match perfectly or not, so we're going to run with it  ;D  I'm going to put the flowergirl in a two tone white/ivory dress...give him an ivory boutinear (spelling) and call it good  :)  It is our day after all, and we aren't shooting for the cover of GQ.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
