NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels...
« on: November 25, 2007, 06:01:42 AM »
Can you find these at most of the common chain stores in England?  (I scanned through the other threads on here and didn't see anything recent so sorry if this topic has already been discussed  :))  Thanks!

I think someone told me that Waitrose might have been carrying them. One of our members's partners works for Waitrose. That was at least a year ago though and I'm not sure it's still the case. Even so, with things like that, not all of the stores will have them (they live in an area with lots of Americans). And Waitrose is not really nationwide.

So in general, as Kaylesh says, the answer is probably 'no'.

Nigella used some on her cooking show the other week.  I believe she said she got them on ebay.

Yeah, they can be found on ebay or online.
But... WHY?   What makes them so much better than regular old British chocolate chips... or the Belgian ones you get in Costco?

I've never tried the Belgian ones, I'm getting some next time.

I'm going to have to do a taste test now I suppose :P

I have the Belgian ones from Costco. They make perfectly good cookies. But I have to say, these is a distinctive taste about the Nestle ones. I can tell when they aren't used and sometimes I need that Nestle taste! ;) It's not like you can't get other brands of chips in the US though. I'd say the same thing over there, too! :P :D

I don't belong to Costco, so the Belgian ones are out.  Can you get the British ones in larger bags than the dinky 100g size?  Where?

I've been stuck chopping up bars and making "chocolate chunk" cookies.  The ASDA dark chocolate bar tastes surprisingly like semi-sweet chocolate chips.

before i renewed my costco membership, i chopped up chocolate bars too!   you can get some nice (and inexpensive) 70%+ choc bars in Aldi.

Ah well you can comfort yourself with the knowledge that at least you won't be contributing to any of Nestle's dodgy practices:

I used to make "chunk" cookies even in the US. I've always found chocolate chips to be too bitty.

I just use the dinky bags-the dark ones, not the milk ones.  I've never had any complaints.  :)

That's why I put in double the chips called for in the recipe.  ;D
