Our boys have HomeAgain chips and have had no problems at all, here or in the US.

They were chipped in the US, at six months, and travelled to the UK under the PETS Scheme.

My dog has the HomeAgain chip and just the tag with the phone # that comes with it has been a help the two times she got out while I was out of town.  HomeAgain tracked me down immediately once the person who found her called the number on her tag.   I knew she was gone and found before my relatives even called.  I let them search frantically for a little while once I knew she was safe because they had carelessly left the gate open AGAIN!  >:( ;D

thanks!  i am glad the chip has come in handy for you!

anyone get the AVID microchip??

i cannot help but worry and worry about her not getting over there well.  did anyone else horribly worry the entire flight?  she does NOT like her kennel that is required for vet visits. i cannot imagine what she will be like on a 10 hour journey!!!

i never had a pet microchipped before , so these questions may sound stupid to some people.

but..

how big is the microchip, and does it hurt the pet when its injected?
wheres it put at on the animal?
hubby is a bit concerned about putting a foreign object in our cats,so how safe is this and is there any side-effects?

no noooo- honestly i was bit worried it would be painful for my kitten but it was absolutely nothing at all.  it was like a regular shot which my cat does well with.
she did not even notice she was given the chip (it is a 2 second shot put in at her back neck area).

not to worry.

the worrying comes in when you need to triple check, then triple check again, every bit of document responsible on getting your loved one over !
i will let you know how it goes once i bring her over.
(she is sitting on my lap at the moment, watching the screen)   :P

Those aren't stupid questions at all! I asked my vet in the US the same things when I had to get Willie microchipped. She showed me the chip before she put it in - it's like the size of half a grain of rice. Really teensy! As alfinch said, it's just like having an injection in the fleshy part of the back of the neck. He didn't even seem to notice it was being done!

HomeAgain here too.  :)

I'm pretty sure there are people on this board that have animals with the Avid chip.  I remember being worried that not many people had the HomeAgain chip and I thought it might not work.  I can't remember exactly, but it needs to be a certain type of chip for UK scanners to read it.  So, I'm pretty sure its not the brand that matters.  In any case,  I called the pets scheme department at the airport we were flying to and asked what scanner they had and what type of chips it could read.

On another note, I would buy the kennel you'll be using for travelling now to get your kitten used to it.  It will help ease its fears about it and may even become a favourite place for it to sleep!  You can put its toys, snacks and blanket in it to get it used to it.

Good luck.

Avid and HomeAgain are both readable, so they're OK. I know there are other brands that are OK, too, but I'm not sure what they all are. I bet if you had a Google around, you could find a list of microchips suitable for PETS.

We have a DATAMARS chip.  Your vet can tell you what chips are readable here, just give them the DEFRA info.  Even if you somehow have/get a chip that's not readable here, it's all fine if you bring your own reader.. or it was, at least.

The cat didn't mind the insertion.  I was a bit freaked out.  The chip was fairly small, but the needle was HUGE!

Dh & I have the Avid microchips in both our cats we didn't have any problems at Gatwick airport with our microchips, our cats came over in March 2005.

I was shocked about how huge the needle was & how small the microchip was.

Oh good!  I am glad to hear someone else has the AVID chip.  Even though my vet shows me it will be read... I still get nervous!
