Christmas cake!
« on: December 24, 2007, 01:49:54 PM »
I made my first Christmas cake this year, and it looks fab, if I do say so myself! ;D

The jury's still out on how it will taste. It seemed a bit dry, although the trimmings were yummy--we scarfed them down before breakfast yesterday.  :-X But hey, it gave me an excuse to play with my snowflake cutters! :D

Wow! Well done Elynor! That looks very pretty and very professional!

I'm determined to make one next year. How early did you start yours? I've heard some say that you should start at least a month before and feed it regularly and others say that just makes it overwhelmingly boozy!

We don't have Christmas cake at my in-laws -- only Christmas pudding.  So I made sure to buy & eat a piece before we left Leeds... ;)  Though all my Yorkshire mates told me that Christmas cake must be eaten with a piece of Wensleydale cheese. :)

Thanks! This was my first time working with fondant, and it's really easy to get it looking good. I won't eat it :P but it does looks pretty.

I baked it Saturday, actually! The recipe says to leave the cake for 3-4 days before cutting and that it's best within 3 weeks. No feeding needed.

It's gorgeous, Elynor!

I didn't make one this year, but I normally do it a couple of months (6 weeks or so?) before and feed it regularly. It doesn't get too boozy - just the right amount of boozy!  ;D

It really depends on how boozy you want it. I always do them in October and feed weekly but I like the boozy flavouring. If you don't, i'd start it early Dec.  (Other half took one to his parents and they thought it too boozy but then they're non-drinkers.. :-X)

Well, it must taste all right, as over a quarter of it has mysterious disappeared. ;D Actually, it's quite nice--a change from the usual dark, spicy fruitcake.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone! :)
