toothpaste for infants
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:59:51 PM »
In the US we were told to use toothpaste without flouride until 2 years or so. I can't find that here in the UK. Is the advice different here? I can only find low-flouride toothpaste. Let me know your experiences please. My daughter has 4 teeth and I can't believe we're so bad as to not brushing them yet!!

I got this for Sammy at Whole Foods in London (I had been looking for something for him locally but hadn't had much luck). I think you can also buy it online in the UK.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The big name toothpaste for kids that you can buy in the UK have very low amounts of flouride (from what I understand)

until you find something you are happy to use- brush without toothpaste. A dentist once told us when we were at headstart that the toothpaste actually made little difference and most use too much you only need a dot...it is mostly for freshening.

Yes, actually, we didn't start toothpaste until he was over a year old. Before that, it was just a wet brush.

Most high street health food shops sell flouride free toothpaste.

I asked my doctor and dentist about this too because my daughter wanted to use what her cousins had at my house, and they said that if you use the recommended amount, it is small enough that it isn't worth worrying about.  If you are concerned, do like the others have said and just use water and a toothbrush.  It will help too!

We're not using it (yet) but we got a sample of Aquafresh Milk Teeth in our Bounty pack when Ellie was born.  It has a low amount of Flouride in it.  I don't know how good it is, but they do have a kids range and it probably wouldn't be hard to find in shops around the country...   :-\\\\

Milk Teeth is widely available. I just preferred to go with something natural as there's a lot of other gunk in commercial toothpaste I don't want him having. I'm switching the adults to natural stuff, too, as soon as this lot of Colgate is gone!

I think they do Julia, if you are in a Thames Water area. I did have a link to the info at one time, I'll see if I can find it for you.

Scratch that, it seems Thames water is not adding fluoride:
