Tie Dye Salmon
« on: April 15, 2004, 04:15:47 PM »
Soozie's comment that she made Salmon for Easter made me think of something.  I do not know if they are doing it to the Scottish Salmon, but most farmed Salmon in the USA is now being dyed.  Of course they have been doing it for a long time and just decided to make it law that consumers had to be notified of it.

For me personally I have gone off eating Salmon since I tasted my first bite of Wild Alaskan Salmon.  It does not have that strong very fishy flavor that the farmed stuff has.  The taste is sublime.  I would be interested to know a little about the Salmon in the UK and if they have something similar.  Thing is eating the wild Salmon only in season is a pain because you can't get it when you want it, but oh it makes Spring yet another joyous occasion.  Just like waiting for Shrimp season of tha GA coast so worth it in every way!

Your topic title gave me visions of fish wearing Grateful Dead tees!  ;D

I believe a lot of salmon is dyed here and I think a lot of it is through what it is fed on the farms. Organic salmon is not dyed so you should look for that.

I have several magazines and articles that list good sources for fish so will take a look there and see what I can find.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Actaually if you can let me know if any of those magazines tell me where to buy the best seafood in Devon and Cornwall and particularly in Plymouth I'd be very grateful.  :)

The more I learn about the food industry the less I wish I knew.  Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Ignorance is bliss. Tell me about it. The DF and I are constantly fighting our desire to eat responsibly (both for our health and the environment) versus our meagre budget.

Probably the most consistent shopping you'll get is Waitrose in Saltash (if you're on that side of Plymouth). I'll take a look today for some of the independent places in the Plymouth area and get back to you. For fish, you might want to get Rick Stein's guide to seafood in the UK. There are almost always organic food markets in most towns/cities.

There are several foodie mags that are worth looking at though I can't decide which I like best: BBC Good Food, Delicious, and Olive.

More to come!  :)
