Small pots on big burners - help!
« on: January 29, 2008, 04:57:58 PM »
My boyfriend and I have asked so many people but no one seems to know the name for what we need, so google can't help!

The problem is: we have a professional gas oven and range (our Dutch barge used to be a hotel), and the gas rings are so big that the metal things that the pots and pans sit on have a huge open space in the middle to allow for the big flame diameter. So my small cast iron milk pan barely reaches to the metal trivet-things and keeps wanting to fall into the flame itself!

I know metal things exist to allow small pots onto wide burners like this because the house I used to live in has one (that they won't part with - I already asked!) but no one knows what they're called and all we can find in stores are those cheapo thin metal diffusers, which isn't what we want as it'll waste half the heat from our kickass flame.

Can anyone help, either with a name of what they're called or where I could get on, either online or in London? thanks!

No - those are both diffusers, which spread the heat around and waste most of it. We don't want to lessen the heat of the flame, just extend the platform that the pan can sit on...

But thanks for the suggestions anyway. I know my explanation wasn't the best - I probably should've drawn a diagram...

now i know what you're talking about- they're like concave metal, in the shape of a cross.  they still on top of your existing burner prongs.

unfortunatly, i've never seen those here.  have you tried wilkinsons?

I think you're going to need to contact a supplier who deals with pro kitchens. Though, now that I think about it, if you're in London, try to go to one of those stores that sells high-end ranges/stoves for home and professionals. Surely they would know (or their various manufactureres would) how to get these items. Who made your range? Can you actually contact them?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

yes! that's exactly what my old house had.

Both excellent ideas, thanks. There's a Wilkinson's in Stratford and I'll check the front of the range tonight and see what google can turn up...

If I find out the name for the item I'll let you all know so we can learn something. :)

Potentially good news!

I checked last night - the oven is a "Modular" (which gives horrible google results) but the additional range is an "Atag" which has a UK site and in their hobs pdf, they show exactly what I'm looking for, available separately, and with product codes!!

And they call it a "cast-iron wok support". But it's exactly what I need, I just need to figure out which model I have to figure out which support will fit it. :)
