When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

"And within months the US department of homeland security is to impose a new permit system for Europeans flying to the US, compelling all travellers to apply online for permission to enter the country before booking or buying a ticket, a procedure that will take several days."

ugh.  This is not what I need to hear when I'm planning a wedding in the US with a EU citizen groom!

Does Bush not realise he is shooting the USA travel industry and tourism in the proverbial foot?

Why would anyone want to go anywhere with all this hassle to deal with...

He needs to get over it....

What about having to fly back to the US for an emergency or a funeral? Permission would still need to be granted?

Bush is off his rocker!  >:(

Besides being absolutely ridiculous it makes the US seem totally paranoid and I wouldn't be surprised if they became a laughing-stock over this.

Not to mention it looks like the US don't even *want* tourism so that makes the US seem even more isolated from the rest of the world by their very own doing.

So very backward.  ::)

How is this different from a visa? I mean, you don't get a stamp but isn't a visa basically a permission to enter the country?

Seriously, wtf?
And if you threw a party

You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Imagine it though--every single person coming to the US to visit, every tourist, every spouse of a US citizen, everyone--for no matter how short a stay would have to apply (I guess online) for permission to do so.  That would be a hassle for many I think and could be a deterrent as well.

Not to mention, who on earth is going to police this on the US side? And it'll supposedly only take a few days? I think not if the gov't is running it.

It'll take a few days when issuing visas becomes a "few days" affair too cause basically this is all it is, just done electronically.

If the EU representatives are not having some interesting and strident discussions with the U.S. Embassy now, I'd be very surprised.

does anyone know what exactly australia has?  i know that when i travel down under, i need to apply for Electric Ticket Authority (?) ETA.  it's valid for a year a think.  it costs something like $20, and take about 12 hours for it to come through.  is this similiar to what the US is talking about?
