Refer to the 'staying in the uk' thread under 'visas and citizenship.' You cant just 'stay' in the UK beyond your 90 day visit. You would have to return to US soil at your 90th day and then fly back to the UK for another 90 days. You could possibly be questioned by authorities once they scan your passport on why you are returning again for another 90 days though if you immediatly go back.

You can not apply for any visas while you are in the UK just because you want to stay longer. You can go to the UK as a student and therefore be guaranteed 3 to 4 years in England (but only be allowed to work 20 hours per week legally) or you can marry your British boyfriend and go that route.

I thought you could stay on a visiter visa for 6 months in the UK, but 90 days  in America? That's what I did before we applied for my fiance visa a few years ago. Has the time period changed?

I was told I would have to apply for an extension visa to stay an entire 6 months as a visitor beyond the 90 days... Maybe this has changed. I went as a student anyway to the UK so that solved my problems.

Good luck!

I went to the UK in November of 2000 on a visitor visa which was for 6 months from  when I entered the country. We wanted to get organized before applying for a fiance visa, which I flew back to the US to do just before my 6 months was up. As far as I know, nothing has changed since then as far as how long a visitor visa to the UK is for. Once I got my fiance visa, it too was for 6 months, within which time, you must either marry, or return to the US once the visa is up, if you havn't married.

There is some good info in this thread http://www.talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=3669.0

If I were you, I'd go back on a visitor's visa and stay for the 6 months (don't overstay your visit!).  Use that time as a "getting to know you" period....find out if you really do love England and, most importantly, make sure you know you can live with your boyfriend for the rest of your life (if that's what you intend to do).

I know how exciting it is to finally meet the one you love and I know how much you just want to move in and get settled and be happy forever, but now is the time to start thinking rationally.  What you do now will set the tone for the rest of your relationship...take things slowly and really get to know each other...THEN worry about fiancee' and/or spousal visas!  :-)

If, after spending some time together, you decide that you want to get married, the easiest way (in my experience) is for the two of you to fly to the US and get married.  Then you'll go to the British Consulate (NYC, LA, or Chicago, depending on where you are) and apply for your spousal visa.  If your application is straightforward, it will be approved the same day.  You'll get your spousal visa which also allows you to work in the UK immediately.  After two years, you'll apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) in the UK.

If he flies back with you, he will have 90 days - that's not 3 months, it's 90 days exactly - in the US.  You can get married anytime during that period, depending on the requirements of the state/county you decide to marry in.  Then you submit/go to the British Consulate in LA and return to the UK with a Spouse Visa for you.  If necessary, he can return to the UK after the wedding and you can follow later with your visa.

He just says he's visiting you.  He shouldn't necessarily go into the whole "girlfriend" or "fiancee" route as that is likely to cause him problems in immigration.  He especially shouldn't say that he's there to get married.  It's, of course, perfectly legal for him to marry on a visitor's visa, but it's better to just be vague and get through immigration with as little hassle as possible.  If he's coming to marry you, he should also have documentation proving that he's going back to the UK (letter from him boss, copy of mortgage, etc.).

If he comes on a visitor's visa, you must marry within 90 days of his arrival.  Once you're married you both (or just you) go to the consulate...LA in your case, and apply for your spousal visa.  You can fly back together or he can go ahead and you'll follow.

If you'd like to know what the spousal visa application process is like, just click on my webpage...it outlines our experience w/ the NYC consulate.
