delurking...
« on: April 20, 2004, 09:48:31 AM »
To say hello...
Have been wandering about this place awhile, kind of nervous about poking my head above ground.

I'm tee, an American from Maryland now living in Salisbury, Wilts.  Long story of how I came to be here, but I've been overseas since late 2001 (18 months in Dubai before coming here to the UK).  Trying to make a start on some sort of new life after tough times (and a very painful divorce) back in the US.  Living with my best and dearest friend, who is British  :)

I've seen that there are lots of you from the Baltimore area...I grew up in Towson.  Lived in Harford County last, for a very long time.

I do love it over here, though--I love the depth of history, the beautiful gardens and the overwhelming sense of the past...

I could do without the cold, rainy weather, most of the time, though--LOL.  I am always joking with my friend about it.  So the perfect days last week, with so much Spring and sunshine about them, were a welcome change!   :)

Welcome, de-lurker. :D The change in weather is *so* welcome, isn't it? I hate the rainy dark cold english winters! Welcome to the site, and don't hesitate to post away no that you're officially de-lurked. ;)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Greetings from another Marylander! I lived in Baltimore last but had an aunt in Bel Air for ages.

I'm so glad it's spring, too. I get pretty bad SAD so winters are pretty glum for me.

Welcome to UKY!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Balmerhon, I was hoping you'd post--when I first got here, seeing your screen handle made me smile.  :)

Bel Air is where I lived for most of my years in Harford Co. :D

This was my first full winter in the UK.  Very different from back *home,* as you well know.   We did get one heavy snow in Salisbury.  And this is the first Spring I have seen in years--something I missed very much when I was in the Middle East.   Spring here seems lovely.  Though I do miss seeing dogwood trees.

And oh, how I miss MD crabs...There is no substitute...sigh.

Welcome to UKY Tee, and you can add your name to the missing MD crabs list.  I am not really from anywhere, but call the Hampton Roads area of Virginia home.  I am still trying to figure out how I wound up far away from the beach in Atlanta.  I remember going crabbing.

I am very glad that you delurked and hope to get to know you better.

Hi there!  Welcome to the site.  We love de-lurkers, btw.  :)

You know, there's a great american crabshack restraunt in London called the Big Easy (http:://www.bigeasy.uk.com)  I expect it won't be *just* the same as MD crabs, but it might get you by.

We'd love to hear more about your story of coming to the UK and finding out more about you!  Hope to see you around more often now that you've made your debut.   :D

Haven't lived in Maryland, but been through several times. Heck, I'm more excited to have another one on here who lives in Wiltshire! ;D

Hi Tam!

I am also from Baltimore! Grew up in Carroll but moved to the city back in the late 80's. Definately a downtown girl! I miss it. Its funny...last night my husband and I were out walking and I just blurted out...I am in the mood for some steamed crabs! We live in Reading...definately not finding them here!

I am not sure if you are interested but we are having a get together at Chili's in Reading on 22nd May. Lots of people will be there (Balmerhon will be there as well). Two Baltimore hon's at one table in Reading...go figure!  :D  There is a thread under meetings for Berkshire RG1 if you want to take a look.

Regards!

Julie

Wishstar, thank you for the crab restaurant info!  If we get up to London sometime, maybe we'll get a chance to check it out.  :)

Thank you to everyone who's replied and been so welcoming.   :D

vnicepeeps, I went crabbing, too, long ago--trot-lining, to be specific.  We had better success with putting out the crab pots, though...all of this was down on the Eastern Shore, where I did spend some time many, many moons ago.

Jules, I don't think we can make it to the get-together in Reading,  though thanks for the heads-up!  I hope y'all have a wonderful time.  :)

And Lisa, yes, I am in Wiltshire!--we live down in Salisbury.  :)

Tam,
I grew up in Montgomery County, and went to Towson State (I know, it is just plain old Towson now, but for the old timers we still like to use the state). Heading down there in a few weeks....and I will for sure have some crabs over the weekend.
Welcome to the site.

Hi Tam, glad you came out of 'stealth mode' ;)  I live in Bournemouth, about 26 or so miles south of you. I love to come up to Salisbury on market days, Tuesdays.  Will have to meet up for coffee, and a go around the stalls. :) Welcome to UKY :)
