This isn't exactly a tax question, but I wasn't sure where else to post it--perhaps you can steer me in the right direction if this is the wrong one?
I've posted to UKY before about my mother's situation: she's USC but lived in the UK for the past 17 years. At Christmas, when she learned that the cancer she'd be battling had spread, and a prognosis of years was reduced to weeks, possibly months, she decided to return to the US for her remaining time. So she's back in the US now receiving hospice care, and will be until her death, which will probably be soon. It's a tough time. I'm dealing with it by trying to get as much in order as I can, which includes looking ahead to probate. Her will was written in the UK and is on file with her UK solicitor. I am one of three executors--the other two are in the UK, as is her immediate heir (her long-term partner). Upon her death, do we need to file for probate in both the US and the UK, or can we just do it in one or the other? Which? Has anyone dealt with this sort of a transatlantic situation before? I'm grateful for any advice or knowledge anyone might have...
