Make way for the Coupling expert....
Coupling ran for four six-episode series over here and was the creation of Steven Moffatt, who has regularly written for the new Doctor Who and all sorts of other things. It's based loosely on his relationship with his wife, daughter of super-producer Beryl Vertue (watch the credits of any Brit comedy and you see her name a lot).
NBC bought the US rights to the series and scripts. They produced a version of the show with the original script, but highly edited for time and content. It flopped. It was one of the network's biggest failures, being pulled after only 4 episodes went to air.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, Moffatt and Vertue were having troubles with changing commissioning editors. They'd half intended to do a 5th series, but didn't get to.
Instead, Moffatt posted a short essay/short story type thing on a Doctor Who forum that explained how the show was meant to end. (Everyone lives happily ever after, basically.)
