I like reading this girl's food blog... she made butter recently!
I fancy trying that sometime...

I used to make it with the kids when I taught pre-school. It helps if you put some marbles in the jar and then shake for days... Seriously, it is a task you need to share with someone, but the end result is really good.

I think I did one time, long ago, in Girl Scouts.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

I was thinking about all the lovely things you could put in it... that smoky salt, cumin seeds, loads of garlic...

I had some butter recently that was SO nice... it was Cornish, or maybe Jersey, and had big crunchy chunks of salt in it -- like Maldon salt or something like that.  It was lovely!

I haven't tried any of the flavored salts. Where do you get the smoky one?
Garlic butter is so good! Makes me think of the Old Spaghetti Factory!

We did it in Kindergarten, it was fun. (But not as tiring with 25 kids sharing the work)

Mmm, the salts sound lovely.

I know I just watched a foodie podcast that made butter. (Just like pkmac said, using marbles)

I found it in Sainsburys, by accident.
I was just looking for the normal Maldon salt, and right next to it was the 'smoke flavoured' one.   Same box, just with brown instead of green writing.  It is *reallly* nice... i put it on the burgers i pan-fried tonight and you could taste the smoke flavour slightly.

I made butter a couple of times, years ago when me and the ex were running our own small dairy farm, milking Jersey cows!  We made our own ice cream too!  Using cream that we skimmed off the top of the bulk tank...the first time I tried making butter, it didn't work.  I was told by someone that I needed to actually let the cream set that I'd skimmed, and skim it again, and let it 'age' for a few days - what I was using was too fresh.  Worked a treat, but making homemade ice cream was easier...

We used to do it when I was a kid, you put some cream into a jar with a clothes pin in it (not sure why a clothes pin as opposed to something else) and it was just like BUTTAH!

I prefer buying it to be honest, a lot less work.

I remember making it at nursery school. The teacher put some milk (or cream?) in a tupperware thing and we all took turns shaking it. Then we ate it on some bread with some mustard and cress we'd grown.

I can't believe I can remember this, it would have been in 1972=3!

I'm going to look for that. Sounds great.

I love that you remember that, because it gives me hope that some of the kids I taught might remember those moments too!

They sell Halen Môn Welsh salt around here and they do a lovely smoky version. And a spicy one, too!

I've never tried making my own butter, but I'd really like to! How about cheese? Has anyone made their own cheese? That's something else I've always wanted to try.

You're either crazy or pregnant!   ;D

Pick up some Graham's organic stuff in Waitrose.

Lovely stuff!

I did it once just to see if I could do it.  I put cream in a little Tupperware thing with some salt and shook it for a few hours.  My arm got tired, but the butter was ok.  Not that much different than store bought though.

I made butter on accident once, when I was trying to whip cream. I just whipped it a little too long and voila! My mom wasn't too pleased as it was for the Thanksgiving pumpkin pie ::)
