side effects from c-sec/anaesthesia
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:28:21 PM »
So I had a c-sec under a general anaesthetic on 12 March. At the hospital I was on morphine for pain control and then they switched me to Tramadol and paracetamol - which they also sent me home with. To that, ibuprofen was added.

You may recall from my constant moaning that I had a very bad cough for pretty much the last 2 months of my pregnancy. This has yet to go away though the Tramadol seems to suppress the cough. But, I can't take that forever. So obviously I've been reducing how much of this I take with a view to getting off it completely by the end of the week.

Right now I'm only taking the Tramadol at night (2 hourly feeds necessiate a cough and pain-free few hours!). During the day, and the few nights I've not taken the Tramadol, I have a lot of achiness. Not just in my abdomen, but my whole body. Almost like the aches you'd get with flu. But aside from the cough that won't go away (doc says it should...) I just have nasal congestion. No other symptoms of illness.

So, after all that rambling, is general body achiness something you can expect after surgery? Along with the usual fatigue and all that? Or is it more likely part of this endless cough/cold?

Also, anyone else had any trouble getting the c-sec scar to heal up completely? The midwives tell me it's fine but it's still moist and doesn't seem to be healing up nearly as fast as it did the last time. I'm dying for some neosporin but I can't find my littel tube of it!

Sorry for the wittering... just getting tired of not feeling like myself still!  :(
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Just a couple of ideas...general anaesthesia is slow to clear from your body because it is fat soluable. So basically it hides in your fat and gets released slowly as you burn fat. So some of your achiness could be from that. I never had general with my caesarean births so I was shocked with my gall bladder surgery at how slow I was to recover. Being achey was just part of the process...it took about 2 months to feel better...where as my caesareans I had felt pretty good within a month or less.

As for slow to heal wounds...that happened with my first caesarean. This may seem odd but honey has many curative properties. You might want to check this out:

Good luck and PM me if you need anything.

I'll send you some Neosporin if you'd like.  I send it to Genau! every now and again.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Looks like everyone buys extra tubes of it when they travel to the US. If none of the above get any to you I will be next on the list and send you some!  ;D

I have Neosporin at the ready as well...
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...
