Driving to Canada in June what papers do I need?
« on: April 21, 2008, 03:46:16 PM »
Hubby is going to do a supporting event for the Formula 1 race in Montreal in June and wants me to go along. But I am confused on what I need as an American with the new rules. Hubby is British and he just takes his passport and it gets stamped. My passport expired and we are not planning on getting it renewed until late summer for our holiday to the UK in Dec., we have two kids who need passports also.

Will a drivers license do? I read what it said online, but hubby has said as he goes there a couple times a year that the guys he goes with have passports and thinks we are out of luck without one for me.

Thanks.

I believe under the new rules you need to have a passport.  You could call the Canadian Consulate to ask since your circumstances are unique.

you can drive across the border with your driver's license & birth certificate- the rules requiring you to have a passport when traveling by land/sea have now been pushed back until June 2009.

(note that if you were traveling by air you would be required to have a passport, the above info is for land/sea crossings only.)

Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

AFAIK, you won't need the passport to enter Canada...

However, you'll have to establish a right to re-enter the US... US passport is obviously sufficient, as would be proof of identity (e.g. drivers license) and proof of citizenship (e.g. US birth certificate).

So all I need is my birth cert and a driver license. Wonderful. Thanks.
