Husband says he is willing to try a Broker again, since people seem so insistent they're great. We have tried Swindon, and they are FAIL. Can anyone else suggest anyone?

Try a small independent broker. Swinton's are a huge outfit and are not going to give you the customer service that a smaller broker will.

I second the suggestion of the Post Office.  We have very reasonable coverage (fully comp) from them, even with me on an American license.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

We tried Adrian Flux when we first got my Saturn to the UK. They would NOT insure the car because they didn't know what it was, even if pointed in the right direction.  :o  Eh well :)

That's odd.   ???   Adrian Flux are usually pretty good on things like that, and at least know what you're talking about (unlike one broker, I forget which, who kept asking me "Pontiac?  What make is that?"   ::) ).

Post office? No kidding!  Do they allow the occasional use of other insured cars as well, do you know?

The "other cars" extension has always been pretty much a standard clause.   I understand that some insurers are now not including it in policies for younger drivers though.

You'll hear a lot of misinformation about this aspect of coverage too.  Some people will say it's only available on a comprehensive policy, not TPF&T (third party, fire & theft), which is not true at all.  Every U.K. TPF&T policy I've ever had since the age of 17 has included it.

A lot of people also seem to have the idea that you are covered to drive somebody else's car only if that person has his own policy for the vehicle, which again is not true.  Unless your "other vehicles" clause specifically requires that (and I've never seen one which does), then you're covered regardless of whether the owner has insurance or not.

I ran into a problem getting insurance here and spent most of a day a few days ago on the phone looking for a company that would even insure me at all on my American license.  Amazingly, after hundreds of calls, Tesco Insurance gave me a very reasonable quote and will even take my insurance history into account from the US.

Thanks so much guys! I will be checking out Direct Line, Tesco, Virgin and Post Office!

Thanks for helping me save hours and hours and hundreds of phone calls looking for an insurance company.

Oh, and update about calling a Broker and going through them...I called and each one I worked with didn't want to work with me the instant they knew I had an American License. I called 6 of them, spending hours, before I just gave up. Yet again, brokers FAILED for me.  :\\\'(

THANKS SO MUCH GUYS!!!  If any more of you can post what you have experienced, I will take those into account as well, and would be most grateful :)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!  :-* ;D 8)

If it's any consolation, even when you're a British citizen and held a U.K. license since the age of 17 you will get that same reaction from many as soon as they realize you want cover for an American car.   Some of the ridiculous excuses they come up with have to be heard to be believed!

Auto insurance is a real jungle I'm afraid, with no rhyme nor reason to many of their policies and premiums, and with huge inconsistencies from one place to another.

That's weird. The first broker I phoned was able to help me immediately and got me a great deal! The other nice thing about brokers is that they'll research every year and offer me alternate providers with lower rates when it's time to renew my policy.

I dont doubt it! It took a week for me to track down a good insurance company for my American Car. They will insure her for 250 quid with all the bells and whistles you could ask for...just wont insure me to drive it until I get a UK driving license  [smiley=behead.gif]

Man. The BS we have to tread through before we can be legal!  ::)

You mentioned at the start that you were previously on your husband's policy with another company.  Have you tried asking this new company if they would insure in your husband's name with you added as an additional driver?

Is there any other way you could do a workaround?   If you had another vehicle in the family, for example, you might be able to get insurance more cheaply for yourself on that car, then you'd be legal to drive the Saturn under the "other vehicles" clause (probably best to have it registered in your husband's name to avoid any question of ownership).

I used SABRE/SWINTON on my USA licence and then got a UK one and I am now with QUINN DIRECT. Quinn Direct do insure US licenses (and Canadian/Australian, etc) AND they take USA no claims discounts and named driving experience. So I highly recommend them as they have been really helpful to me. They are based in Ireland I think but insure all over the uk and will definately insure a USA licence holder. Swinton was OK but charged me waaay too much. :)

Just making an update.

I have found a car for myself (Fiat Cinquecento Sporting), and have gone to Directline, Tesco, Post Office and QUINN for insurance quotes as you guys have suggested.

Everyone gladly offered to insure me, EXCEPT Directline! They did not want to insure me until I had a British License (GRRR!!  >:(), which was disappointing. But! Post Office won me out for under 500 quid insurance for a full year with all the bells and whistles I needed :)

Thanks for your help guys! You saved me hours and hours of work, and I cannot thank you enough :) You all are peaches  8)
