I have heard of it but never seen it.

I was always told by a few people that the man does the proposing unless its a leap year and then then girl is allowed to ask the man...I suppose you have to give them something when you ask...

I am not going to propose, he is (I already know he is getting me a ring).

I saw a thread on here about engagement rings and noticed a few women mentioned their husbands have an engagement ring as well. That is why I thought it was a UK custom. I also asked a friend who lives in Durham, and she said she got one for her husband as well (he proposed), and they've been married over 20 years.

Hmmmm. I don't know what to do now.

My DF had one that he bought for himself but when he moved in, it disappeared.  It was a simple band from amazon.com but he still misses it.

Some people give a watch. Some a ring. Some nothing. Some get a tattoo. Whichever way you go, you can be sure people will have something to say about it so just do what works for you. If you're not sure, you can always ask the FH what he'd like.

I got my husband a ring -- we picked it out together. It made sense cause he likes and wears them. I didn't go down on one knee when I gave it to him. But he didn't go down on his knee when he gave me mine either.

My husband got 2 kids when we got married and Coby was conceived on our wedding night so he got much more than he bargained for. I'm guessing he would have preferred a tattoo!

In the United States and Canada today, it is becoming more common, but still quite rare, that a woman will also buy an engagement or promise ring for her partner at the time of the engagement.

In Egypt, Brazil and many European countries, both the man and the woman usually wear engagement rings, most often in the form of matching plain bands of white, yellow, or red gold.  In these countries the man's engagement ring often also eventually serves as the wedding ring. Some men wear two rings, but this is rarer. The woman's wedding ring can sometimes have a precious stone. In northern Germany, the tradition of engagement rings is not often followed and is often viewed as an American import. In Spain, the woman sometimes buys an engagement wristwatch for the man after accepting a marriage proposal.

I'd say that, especially as cases where women earn more than their partners become more common, this is a welcome development.  Not sure that I'd go for a ring per se (I don't own a single one and have no desire to ever have more than one), but if my future fiancee, whoever she may be, feels like buying me a Breitling Professional Aerospace (ideally Titanium... gold is a bit too flashy) or an Omega Seamaster (preferably all steel), I definitely won't object.

My husband had an engagment ring, it was just a simple band.

My engagement ring is actually a silver pendant with my name of one side (in the Ogham alphabet) and husband's name on the other.  A friend of ours made it and as a bonus he made an extra one for my husband--so we both have engagement pendants.

We actually used them at our wedding instead of rings.  We do want to get wedding rings eventually.
