A Proper AMERICAN Breakfast
« on: May 11, 2008, 06:07:36 PM »
I have an American friend coming down from Yorkshire for a week-end in London and she is dying for a proper American breakfast (i.e. no beans, no bangers, no grilled tomatoes).  Anybody have any suggestions for American-style breakfasts in London?

Are you cooking? If so I guess you can get some Bisquick and make pancakes or omelette's w/hashbrowns. You can get Oscar Mayer bacon at some Sainsbury's if you want to go that far.

I'm NOT cooking (although I can do a proper American when driven).  Nobody wants to come out to the wilds of Kent (only Belvedere, but ....).  Hash browns seem to be a primary need.  I'm not a breakfast eater myself.

I have a vague recollection that there are some other places already mentioned in the food threads about places to get American-style breakfasts. I'll see if I can get the search to work and find them.

I'm lukewarm on Giraffe myself. But the one we had in Exeter was VERY small and brand new - so still struggling to run smoothly. It was certainly the best we got to American out there though!

OK, I found this using the search but I"m sure there are more:

That article also raved about Smith of Smithfields in London for big american breakfasts with pancakes and waffles and open on weekends. Think it's a John Torrode restaurant.... 67 Charterhouse, Farrington tube stop.

Now I want to try Giraffe - if I'd've known of its existence yesterday DH would've had to take the long way home from dropping my Mom off at the airport.   :\\\'(  Now I want an American breakfast that I don't have to cook / clean up after myself!

Thirded! We have one right outside our house and it sees a great deal of our wallets while my butt and thighs see a great deal of its pancakes.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Lucky! (Well, not your butt and thighs ;))

The first one I went to was in London and I was very impressed.  I think it was the Kensington one.

That's the only one I've been to and it was yummy!! (I haven't tried it for breakfast, though.)

Giraffe is nice for breakfast, though very limited selection of "American" dishes.

The pancakes are sublime and wonderfully fluffy.  They top them with berries and bananas (I hate bananas, so I get without) and give you wonderful maple syrup on the table to drench to your heart's content :D.

The tostada thing is also delicious for a more Mexican-style breakfast: totrilla covered in egg, chorizo, black beans, salsa, guac, and my memory fails me as to what else.  It's not anything I've ever had in the States, but equally delicious.  In fact, OH and I usually order one of each and split.  Prices are reasonable for a 'sit down' breakfast, though I think the drinks/juices are a little much for my budget.

It's not cheap, but Automat on Dover St. in Mayfair do an 'American' brunch.

Here's the menu:

I've been there for dinner before, and it's a nice place, but I've never done brunch there.

I also am a big fan of Smith's of Smithfield.
