Tiny cars
« on: May 25, 2008, 07:45:26 PM »
Why are the cars so small in this crazy country? And this is in addition to driving on the WRONG side of the road >:(

Well, have you tried to drive a larger car on rural country roads? I can assure you it's not easy and many times not even possible in some areas.

And you've posted about this before. We do get you think the whole driving test/ cars thing here in the UK is silly.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Maybe you are just a giant?

You can buy bigger cars (jeeps, land rovers) if you want, but most people drive smaller cars because the gas mileage is better, plus insurance/road tax is cheaper!

didja notice that parking is an issue in this country?  I for one don't want to be trying to park a behemoth of a vehicle..  I'll gladly drive my teeny car!

According to Wikipedia, and other online sources, most of the world actually 'drove' (i.e. rode on horses) on the left up until the late 1700's, when the US and France began 'driving' on the right, so technically, the left is the original and therefore not really the 'wrong' side of the road (check out http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/driving%20on%20the%20left.htm for the full story).

Not sure about the car sizes, but I'd guess that in general, smaller roads = smaller car carrying-capability. I'd love to see Hummer-sized cars trying to navigate the tiny British countryside roads  :P.

Well in AMERICA the side to drive on is the RIGHT and that is why it is called the RIGHT side of the road. I am gonna be importing my Ford F650 and I will be able to CRUSH silly little European cars so I can have BOTH lanes, HELL YEAH ;D But seriously, what is it with tiny cars here? Have you seen the "Ford" Fiesta? It is an embarressment to the Ford motor company. It is not a TRUE AMERICAN FORD >:(

Smaller cars are preferred because there isn't the same amount of space here as there is in the US.  It's really rather elementary once you move past the rhetoric and actually think about it.

Well, I guess that's because it's BRITISH FORD.   ::)

Perhaps you could rent out the bed as a parking alternative for those tiny cars you hate.  You know, to help pay for your monthly gazillion pound gas bill. ::)

Have fun trying to drive a LHD car in the UK.  You'll be on the wrong side of the car for some of the most elementary things, like paying at a car park.  Feel free to drive your big American truck but it'll cost you quite a bit to put gas in it and for road tax.  Never mind getting insurance for it.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

 :D

Bigger is not always better. Needing a giant car only makes others wonder what you're compensating for.  ;)

I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

I would LOVE to have a tiny car. My '94 sable is costing me a fortune in gas $$$  :-\\\\

My next car is going to be little...hopefully a blue VW New Beetle. (I've been wanting one since 1998!!!)
