London Book Club - 19 July
« on: May 26, 2008, 11:12:09 PM »
The next book we will be reading will be Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka.

Here is a synopsis from Amazon:
Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcee. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside.' Sisters Vera and Nadezhda must put aside a lifetime of feuding to save their emigre engineer father from voluptuous gold-digger Valentina. With her proclivity for green satin underwear and boil-in-the-bag cuisine, she will stop at nothing in her pursuit of Western wealth. But the sisters' campaign to oust Valentina unearths family secrets, uncovers fifty years of Europe's darkest history and sends them back to roots they'd much rather forget...

Thanks to Mort for this recommendation.   :)

We will meet at 3:00PM at the Tide Tables Cafe , 2 The Archways, Riverside, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1TH Phone: 020 8948 8285.  It is right along the river and the seating is all outside.  You can reach Richmond by overland train from Waterloo or Clapham Junction or by District line on the tube.  The cafe is about a 10 minute walk from the train station.

Looking forward to another fun meeting!

Got the book from the library today and I can't wait to start reading it. If all goes well and we're not too mired in renovations on the 19th, I'll be there. This will be my last meeting before baby, so I am really going to try to make it. DH might come too, but I don't think he'll participate in the discussion. I'll confirm closer to the 19th.

We're tentatively RSVPing.  Depends on what's going on, but we have the book and should have it read by then.

Mr. Moggs says that I will like Richmond, so I hope we can make it.

Also, I will run by my recommendations for the following meeting as soon as I can narrow them down a bit.

Not going to make it I'm afraid.  Have fun!  It's a great book.

Ooo, yes!!  With the wedding out of the way, I think I'll definitely try and make this one.  It helps that I've been dying to read this book ever since it came out.  I think I will try and pick up a copy for the 8-hour flight to our honeymoon! :D

Fairly firm confirmation on my part - and probably my OH.  Will confirm finally closer to the day :).

Yeah, responses!  ;D  I was beginning to think I would be discussing the book with the geese and swans.

Mort, since you did the recommendation, would you mind bringing some discussion questions?

If anyone is unfamiliar with the area, and might need directions on the day, etc.  PM me and I will give you my mobile number.

About a month. ;)

But you can take a girl out of England but you can have her internet when you pry it from her cold dead hands!  ;D

I'll be happy to bring some questions. I really hope you guys enjoy the book!
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Bumping this as a reminder for those who said they are coming...and also to catch the eye of anyone else who would like to join us.  Still plenty of time to get the book and read it.   [smiley=book.gif]

Book Club is this Saturday!  Can I get a head count/re-confirm of those who are coming so I can get the appropriate table and chairs saved?

Thanks!
