Were you scammed by your moving company?
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:33:28 PM »
Just wondering.  We are waiting for OH's stuff to arrive from California and we have already been told it will be delayed by 4 weeks.....(poo)

The topic of discussion that comes up daily at the moment is he worries that its going to get stolen or damaged or he is worried he is going to have to pay huge costs if his stuff gets held to ransom...all sorts of senarios play out really...

So I wondered if anyone here had any problems with Rogue movers and if so..what happened and who did you use??

EDIT: Sorry! Just realised I should have posted this in the moving section! maybe a mod can move it??  Sorry!

My US movers sucked so much... I don't even want to go there, but it was TERRIBLE AND STRESSFUL AND WOULD NEVER USE THEM AGAIN (A subcontracted from the parent UK company- Miami moving company, I've blocked out their name they were so terrible)
I was so worried it was going to get lost- and well these stupid guys put all the wrong information everywhere it was supposed to go to Glasgow and it ended up in Edinburgh and took much longer and to sort out

But once my stuff got to the UK, the movers on this end were awesome.  I was very happy with them over here and the two Scottish blokes who moved my stuff into my house were so warm and friendly and helpful and apologized for everything, even though it wasn't their fault at all!

Thank god I didn't have to pay for any of this though, or I would have been BullS*it

What kind of "additional charges"?  That doesn't sound legit.

Exactly!  They quoted us for a certain amount of stuff..then said that they were 10 boxes off the original quote (even tho they packed it themselves) and charged additional moving fees $300 approx.

Wow, thats bad.  We used UPakWeShip when I moved here and they just picked up our shipment a few days ago to go back home.  No additional fees except what US customs may charge for xraying a few of our boxes.  I have a phone number/email address for the UK guy who arranged everything on this end.  And the same for the US end.  They have been great, respond immediately and didn't have one problem with my shipment.  It even arrived exactly when they told me it would.

Sounds a bit shady that you are getting charged any additional fees.  Hope it all works out and his stuff turns up safely.

Oh man, did you check this company on movingscam.com before you used them? That sounds so shady.  What kind of contract did you have?

Did you sign a contract with them detailing their charges?

Well this is the issue...before we knew about movingscam the stuff was already picked up. :(

I am sure it will be fine.....Items from this company do turn up in the end...but they give you the run around and lack of communication is un-nerving sometimes..but they do give us some forms of communication...they guy rang us yesterday and gave us a new date for it to arrive in the UK and apologized profusely about the delay.  In my mind..if he was up to no good..he wouldn't bother ringing us ?? but we shall see.

We are not moving furniture or anything like that but we are moving lots of sentimental stuff that used to belong to OH's father before he passed away..so it means alot..even tho it doesn't have a huge value.

I just try and keep the OH positive...and stress free..but I can understand why he is stressed out to the max about it.  I am sure it will be fine.  I am always the optimist!

I just wondered what types of problems others may have suffered..if any?

I whittled my life down to 7 (big) boxes of c*r*a*p* after the first 2.5 years here (and more things being in storage) and mailed them through Canada Post without a hitch.  I guess I was lucky!

Was the quote your fiance got at the start for a "door to door" all inclusive service? if not, that might be why they are adding in various costs here and there. If it was an all inclusive price then he shouldn't pay anything else.

I'd definitely check the terms and conditions of whatever was signed up to. Any regulatory bodies in the US you can complain to, if needs be?

Best of luck!
