« on: June 11, 2008, 01:27:51 PM »
my cat is def weird and its ok that is why i love her! but since her dad (dh) has been gone she wont leave me a lone, normally she loves on him and everything and totally ignores me. i notice she dont want to do anything. she is lazy to begin with. lol... she only eats dog food. canned dog food . and she wont eat a lot..anyways, is there anything i can do to make her feel better? she isnt purring or anything like she normally does, even when my stepson holds her she refuses him too.... :\\\'( dh will be back in two days, but how can i reassure her? should i be worried?

Yes, cats can get depressed.

She will probably feel better when dh is back.

Keep an eye on her food, if cats go too long without eating, they can develop fatty liver disease, which is deadly. But that probably won't happen if she is only feeling bad for too days.

Does she normally eat only dog food, or is she only doing that now because she is depressed? Dog food does not provide enough protein for cats.  Cats have a higher protein requirement than dogs.

Get some Feliway, that always perks my cats up. You can get it in a diffuser or in a spray.

Cats do get depressed.  When I split from my ex partner..I took sid with me to my new house because he threatened to put him to sleep (sid is a little spesh-al and accident prone) My ex never liked him.  Anywho..I took my little sidders with me and he was really sullen for a few weeks adjusting to a new home. Very sulky and lazy. I found that by buying him raw catnip leaves from the pet shop..it made him all frizzy and perkey again! also I did treat him to the odd bit of roast chicken to perk him up also.

The weather has gotten hotter over the last few days and cats do tend to get a little "sleepy" in the heat.

I hope the little fella perks up soon  :)

I agree with all these things. Catnip is a good idea and give him a special bit of food that your kitty likes and usually doesnt get (for Olly its prawns)... and the heat does make them sleepy.

Is your cat a playful kitty usually? When Olly is down I usually buy him a new toy (such a child).  Or, since he misses your husband why dont you give him a towel or sweatshirt that smells like your hubby and put it in his bed.  I always put my towel in Ollys bed when we go away on holiday because it smells like me and i like to think it makes him more comfortable.(weird, i know).

I think it can be hard to know what to do for sure, since each cat has his or her own personality and needs different ways to be cheered up.  My little fellow keeps cheerful most of the time, but I found that if he does feel down any time the best medicine is just to pay him lots of attention and keep chatting to him.  It seems to perk him up.

I used to have a British Blue Shorthair called Arnie and they can come accross as fussy and a little "snobby"

Mine loved Crispy Duck from the chinese! or corned beef.  He was a pain in the ars* when it came to cat food..he would eat the jelly or the gravy and leave the meat!  I found that he would only eat Whiskars or Tesco own brand at a push...anything else..he would stand in protest at his bowl refusing to eat a bean.  He hated change...so that might be the problem....the breeding and not that cat.

If she has always been eating dog food, then that shouldn't be a problem. I thought maybe she was changing her eating habits due to being depressed.

Can you give her something with your husband's smell, like a shirt, to cuddle.

If you have allergies to cats, can you take an antihistamine temporarily?

I definitely agree with the "give her something that smells like DH" idea - I do the same thing with my kitties when I go out of town.

And I totally sympathise with the never-ending cat food trials - you're lucky she'll at least eat dog food, as mine are so picky that the only wet food they'll eat is from the US - and it's not even anything good, it's Meow Mix!  ::)  The amount of suitcase space that I *COULD* be filling with chocolate chips and cornbread mix.... :P

Hope your kitty is back to normal soon!!

Our cat, Einstein, won't eat wet food at all.  We just ran out of dry food and I wanted to see if he'd eat the wet food, but he won't even consider it.  He just looks at us and meows.

Guess I'm off to the shop!
