"Californian Football" ???????
« on: June 13, 2008, 02:30:24 PM »
I just over heard a conversation between a boy of about 8 or 9 and his mother. He was telling his mother that at school today "We played Californian football - otherwise known as rounders" !!!!!!  My half Californian son will be going to the same school as this kid next year and I don't know what is going to happen if he comes home and tells his dad something similar!!!

Bizarre isn't it? I think maybe it's a piss take - Americans don't know how to play football kind of thing ...

I hope you're right, because any other explanation would be too bizarre!

The only other non-piss-take explanation I can think of is that he was told that the status of rounders/baseball in California is analogous to the status of football in the UK.  I could see how a kid could interpret that as "California football".

Maybe he just got the name wrong and it was actually 'Californian Baseball' or something similar, but he got confused and called it football instead.

Hmm... maybe it involved guacamole.  That makes anything "Californian"! ;D
