Can Anyone Help Me ID This Vegetable?
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:39:40 AM »
I went to the farmer's market today and there was a middle eastern vegetable there I had never tried before, and neither had DB, ever heard of it actually.

I bought it and tried to remember the name of it, but can't. Can anyone help me out? I know it's middle eastern and I believe it's a type of zucchini.

Thanks!

I could be wrong, but it looks like a bottle gourd.  Other names: opo, calabash, cucuzza.. and there are many more.

Comparing squashy things here.. :D does the thing look like the ones in this link?  The pale zucchini-like things I'm thinking of are fairly bottom-heavy.

Looks like a marrow to me although those usually have a darker skin.

Yeah, I think it's a marrow.  A relatively small and pasty one, at that, but that's what I'd guess.

I don't think it's bottle gourd because of its end - bottle gourd usually has a round end, not a ridged one like you see in a zucchini.  Plus bottle gourd doesn't have the stripes like the photo; they are usually a solid light green. I think marrow is the likely answer!

is there another name for the marrow that everyone is mentioning? I really think it started with a C...but don't recognize cabalah, could be cucuzza if that's middle eastern...

Now why would the vendor at a farmer's market in the States say it's a courgette, when that's the same as a zucchinni? And they are far greener than the photo.

Courgettes come in a variety of colours, it's just the dark green ones are more commonly available in the UK/US.  Apparently the pale yellow/green ones are quite common in the Middle East.

Well she asked if it could be called something else beginning with c. Courgette begins with c and is another name for a zucchini.  Just trying to be helpful.

No, I would have remembered if it was courgette.

I think I found the answer though. I also posted a thread on a food forum I go to and someone came back saying it looked like a coosa/kusa. They posted some pictures that look like mine except longer, coosa also looks like the word that was on the sign at the farmer's market. Thanks everyone! I can't wait to try it!  :)

ETA: I just also saw that they can be called Italian squash or cucuzza. The picture earlier didn't show one with a stem that looks like mine, so I didn't think it was the same thing, but apparently it is. And, the person also said that if it gets longer it becomes a marrow. I guess the small ones can be cooked like a zucchini, but the long "marrow" ones should be cooked like a squash.

Chayote or Mirliton?  It reminds me a bit of one of those.

They have those at my Tescos!

I am not sure of the name, but I will look when I go.  It does start with a C, is related to a marrow and is used in soups and stews to add bulk.

At least that is what the sign in Tesco says.
