How to find a dentist
« on: July 31, 2008, 12:11:45 PM »
Hello! I have a tooth that is bothering me but I am not sure it is anything major. I would like to get to a private dentist as I am very wary of the NHS stuff. How do I find a dentist in my area that is private. I live in Uxbridge so if anybody else lives around here and has a dentist please let me know. I would like to get my teeth cleaned as well but after reading some of the posts that sounds like it is not the same as in the US. I really hate dentists but I dont think I will be able to avoid going to one.

Brenda

It may sound obvious but I would look in the Yellow Pages or on yell.com

As you live in England www.nhs.uk has a search tool at the top that will locate dentists based on a postcode search.

I know want to avoid the NHS but there is really no such thing as a "private dentist" or an "NHS dentist."  Dentists work for themselves or the practice; a lot of them contract with the NHS to see a certain number of patients at NHS rates (similar to HMO bulk contracts in the US) along side their private paying patients, some only see patients privately.  If you really want a dentist that does no NHS work at all - then you could use this site to cross reference with the Yellow Pages

I just asked around my office for a recommendation and went to the one people spoke most highly about.

just call the dentist nearest you.  Chances are, he or she will do private work.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Thanks for all the info. I did find one that my coworker let me know about and they turned out to be a nice office. They are private pay and dont take NHS but at least I have somebody to go to now.
