Pimm's
« on: August 05, 2008, 05:46:15 PM »
What exactly is Pimm's?  I know it's a summer drink of some kind.  What is it made of?  I had some at the airport.  Frankly it tasted like a  flat Dr. Pepper.  I just didn't get all the hurrah about it.  Maybe if it was mixed with tequila and had a salted rim....
Not better, nor worse.  Just....different.

Pimm's is a brand of alcoholic beverages. The most popular is Pimm's No. 1 Cup, which is gin based and is 25% alcohol by volume. It contains a secret blend of herbs and [not very much] quinine (like Schweppes Indian Tonic Water). It is a kind of dark red-brown colour and this is probably the one you tasted. Invented by James Pimm in 1840. Usually drunk in summer mixed with lemonade or tonic or as a cocktail ingredient.

You and me both. Personally I think it tastes disgusting. Some people claim that you can make a substitute with equal measures of gin, orange Curacao and red vermouth. (Yuk!) My parents like it. My view is, why mess around with perfectly good gin? (I like it neat).

At one time they marketed 6 different varieties, but only No. 1 and No. 6 are sold nowadays. Pimm's No. 1 Cup is based on gin, 2 was whisky 3 brandy 4 rum 5 rye and 6 is vodka.

Actually a version of No. 3 with spices and orange peel is sold seasonally as Pimm's Winter Cup.

I'm glad someone asked!  I have been curious myself.  Still have not tried it.

You might like it. A lot of "wrap me in the England flag" types say it is so English, well personally I think that they do bitter apƩritifs better on the Continent, e.g. Suze, Marie Brizard, Campari, etc, but everyone to their own taste.

Hee hee...  Most Americans I have encountered here fit that description more so than the English for sure!

Yes, I know, but I didn't want to be the one that said it... :)

I love Pimms and Lemonade, its the ultimate summer drink for me. A jug of Pimms and Lemonade, a sunny day in a park somewhere, or sitting on a square. Pure heaven.

There is nothing so nice as a fresh pitcher of ice-cold Pimm's on a lovely summer day!  Mmm.

I've always preferred wine myself.

Although yesterday when I was in the vintners, building up my supply for after this one is delivered and picking up some ale for DH, I noticed this stuff called Pinky vodka.

I'm not a spirit-drinker for the most part, but that was a very pretty bottle it came in.

Thanks for taking the time to educate me.  It appears I must sample Pimm's, all in the name of research, of course
