It depends who is caseworking the application.  Either could happen.

Last I heard they were saying 6-8 weeks. My request for variation of circumstances (or whatever they call it) was submitted on 12 June and they only got around to looking at it late last week. So you've got a while before you need to panic. ;)
Just got an email that the uni has received my work permit! Hooray!!! :D

Update

I was just informed that my work permit arrived at the agency this morning. It took from July 7th-until August 15th.

I'm wondering if anyone can help with this question: If a work permit is submitted with the anticipated start date of the job as September 1, and then approved sometime in the second half of August, can the person to whom the work permit has been grated defer taking up the job until December? That is, once a work permit is approved, how soon must the holder of the permit take up the job?

thanks!

retrobolted - after getting the WP you need to get entry clearance within 6 months....after which WP will expire (Gurus please correct me if i am wrong)...so answer to ur question is YES.

BTW did u hear anything from Uni/Home office about WP?

matrix, do you have to get entry clearance within six months, or is entry clearance, if gotten, valid for six months? I've heard different things, so it would be helpful if someone could confirm.

No, nothing yet from the uni. They have, however, offered to defer the start of my job until December so that I could teach the fall semester at my current position (and thus not leave the uni where I currently teach in the lurch by resigning on short notice).

vicky if u can please help here: what is the exact scenario..i.e.

1) u have 6 months time to get entry clearance after u get WP...? after getting work permit till what period i can defer entry clearance..

or

2) u need to take entry clearance after WP which is valid for 6 months...

retrobolted - its good to know that you are relaxed w.r.t ur current job!! enjoy ur weekend..

but i guess ur original question is answered..even if you dont take up a job on september 1st ur WP remains valid in december whichever is true (1 or 2).

Thanks! I'm already in the UK--my job was arranged so that it was split between two universities, so they had to make the changes to the WP when I moved. It took about eight weeks. :-\\\\ My original permit only took five days!

You must get entry clearance within 6 months of the date of issue of the permit.

Matrix et al., I just heard from the Uni, which apparently was able this afternoon to get through to someone at the Home Office and confirm that my work permit has just been approved. Apparently there is some kind of "wrinkle", in that the name isn't quite correct, but that allegedly is something they can fix easily. So with luck yours (Matrix) should arrive soon as well!
