how much does it cost to send 5 pets?
« on: August 16, 2008, 12:30:01 AM »
When 4 are birds?

I'm planning to take 1 dog and 4 birds from US to UK. I am thinking of putting 4 birds in 2 crates, which would make me send 3 crates in total.

Are prices per crate or pet? Anyone have any ideas on price? (flights through continental)

Thanks for any ideas or tips!  :)

I'd phone Continental, if I were you. Also, dropping a line to Defra wouldn't hurt either. I have no idea what the rules are regarding birds, but you may not be able to put two in one crate.

The cost is based on the size and weight of the crate.  I would definitely speak to someone at DEFRA as they are very strict about what you can and cannot do.  They may not allow your to put multiple animals in a single crate.  Also, I cannot stress this enough... make sure your vet knows what he/ she is doing and double checks everything.  Our vet forgot to put 1 date on the paperwork and DEFRA held him in customs for an extra 8 hours.

Regarding cost, I brought a 13 pound cat over from the US to the UK and using a VARI brand medium kennel it cost appx. $1,000 just for the flight (not including the kennel, food/ water dishes, vet treatments, transport to the airport, etc.)

Let me know if you have any more questions as Im happy to help.

My understanding is that fuel costs also factor in, too, in addition to size of the crate and weight, at least, I was told this by Continental animal cargo personel on the phone during the run-up to my cat traveling. Since fuel costs fluctuate, I called to check more than once, particularly the day before travel, to find out what I could expect to pay when checking my animal into our flight.
