Aaaaargh!
« on: May 20, 2004, 02:51:07 PM »
Ok. Breathing.

I just finished talking with an IRS tax advisor to ask about filling out my forms since my marital status has changed. She couldn't find record of my 2002 tax return.

Guess who put the incorrect social security number on her forms last year?? That would be me. It was one digit out. I was so unused to using it since moving to the UK, I guess.

So, basically, I've been told to refile  last years (2002)  1040 and 2555-EZ in my now married name and mail it separately to the IRS. Then send my 2003 taxes the same way.

How could I have been so stupid??? Helen...does this sound like the advice I should follow?

Thanks.

Yes. It does.

It seems to me that all you have to do with the 2002 return is to change the SSN to the correct one and refile it. You can then file the 2003 at the same time.

If you were married in 2003 and your husband is not a US citizen, I assume you are filing "married filing separately" for this year.

Also do not forget that you can file your returns with the US embassy here in London.
