Acupuncture?
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:49:53 PM »
Does anyone have any recommendations in how to find a good acupuncturist?  I am in pain, but pain meds make me so loopy, so I thought I may try something more natural.

I'm not positive, but I think you can get it through the NHS.  Maybe ask your GP?  I did it a few years back for different reasons, but I have to say I thought it was brilliant.  Very relaxing.

I've been to the lady at the Centre for Complimentary Therapies across the river and she was very good.  Her name is Juliet something or another.

Hmm, that would be great if it was! (As long as I don't have to wait for a 2 month referral, haha!)

I have no idea where you are but my wife goes and she said its money well spent she feels great after she has been, bit sore for a day but then more energy her shoulders and hips ease up and she doesn't feel as stressed out.

Good luck with finding one

I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

I know, that would be no help at all.

A friend of mine had Physio (I know not the same) on the NHS and she only waited two weeks.

BTW, I totally recommend Physio for pain, it's like I'm better then before I hurt my back.

When I had Acupuncture, it cost about £25, so not horrible if you are desperate.

Cool. I'm not entirely sure what will help me out, I thought acupuncture might though.  I have a severe inflammation and swelling of the cartilage and muscle connectors in my rib cage- it started on one side of the belly, has increased to both sides, all the way up the sides, under my armpits and all the way up the back.  It totally messes with my abdominal muscles, making me want to puke all the time.  Its hard to breathe. It keeps me up at night. The swelling and inflammation is making me so lightheaded and dizzy and completely and utterly exhausted all the time. Its very painful!! I have finally been crawling back into work after 3.5 weeks off.  I'm working 1/2ish days and I've been coming home completely wiped out. GP says I could be like this for 3 or 4 months!

I would try acupuncture.

Ask for more time off if you need it.

Hugs!

Thanks.  GP says that all they can do is give me pain meds and to take things like ibuprofen (400 mg 3 x a day and it doesn't touch it or the swelling!) I've been using a hot water bottle which helps a bit.    I actually want to go to work, my bosses have been fantastic, they tell me to stay home. I crawl in because of boredom! They tell me to go home!

400 mg ibuprofen is only two tablets - that's right.  I always take US prescription strength ibuprofen (that's called motrin in the US)...which is 800 mg (4 pills) up to 3 times a day (only as/when I need pain meds from time to time - but I take it for cramps, arthritis, when I hurt my knee, etc).  And I take it with food on my stomach.

What is causing this to happen to you, phatbeetle?  The severe inflammation and swelling?  :\\\'(

We're not sure.  I haven't had any viruses or extreme coughing fits or infections or anything  :-[

I swear by accupucture and accupressure. I've found that with my chronic problems, it's the best pain relief I've ever found. It might be expensive, but the relief that can be found is very worth it.
We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

Ha, see here's another US versus UK healthcare- My sister has some back pain, she walked out with a script for vicoden, flexeral, and 600 mg ibuprofen.  I get told I can take 400 mg ibuprofen 3x a day OR 30 mg codiene/500 mg paracetemol 3x a day, but not both. I guess they really like to be stiff upper lipped here!
