Nice suburban areas of Glasgow??
« on: October 10, 2008, 07:42:15 PM »
We are thinking about moving to Glasgow next summer.  My husband is from there but hasn't lived there in over 20 years.  We have a 5 year old daughter.  Which neighborhoods are the niciest?  We would like a detached house with a garden and garage and want to be close to a train station for around 250-300k pounds.  Where are the best schools?  I thought Bothwell was nice but seems to be super expensive.

Also any places to avoid?

With that sort of budget  :o you should be able to get just about anything you want!
The West End is the nicest part of town; the East End the worst.  (East of the Merchant City, i mean.  The Merchant City used to be pretty bad, before it was called the Merchant City, but it's nice now.)
In between east & west, and outside the city boundary, you can find just about anything else.
With that sort of budget, you might like someplace like Newton Mearns or Giffnock/Clarkston/Orchard Park, which are all on the south side.

Where do your inlaws live?  What bit's your husband from?

I second the recommendation for Newton Mears or Giffnock.

My husband grew up in Cathkin.  They are building expensive houses there but he's not sure if it is getting nicer or is still the same.  They tore down a lot of the really bad council housing buildings but a lot of them are still there.  His parents still live there.  He wants to be close enough to see them but not too close (he doesn't want them coming over every day!)

We will probably look in areas of South Lanarkshire.  I would kind of prefer closer to Glasgow, a more urban environment but wonder if there would be many families with kids.

I don't even know where Cathkin is!

Anyway, you've got a good-sized housing budget, so you should be able to find something you like in a good area.

When are you coming over for a fact-finding mission?  :)

My daughter and I came over in Aug to visit my inlaws but my husband couldn't come because of work.  I think he might come over for a week sometime in Nov or Dec and look at some neighborhoods.  We aren't planning on coming over until next summer.

I third the Giffnocl & Newton Mearns recommendations.  Busby (I think) is nice and Bishopbriggs (I know) is nice too.

Cathkin?  Could he mean Cathcart perhaps?

Cathkin is near Cambuslang and Rutherglen and Burnside.

I live in Ruchazie, which seems to be a "poorer" section of the city.  From our travels so far, North and South Lanarkshire look nice (we went as far as Motherwell).  I go to Glasgow Uni and love the West End, but it seems everyone else does as well.  The area around Rutherglen also seemed to be pretty nice suburban areas.
