I wasn't too keen on the last 10 minutes with the brothel in Nevada though... considering vastness of the West and all the scenery, I think he could have put that last segment to much better use!

I agree totally.  I've never been that far west, but was sorry to see that he used the Nevada segment to cover Vegas and a brothel!  But, then, why complain?  We got to see sheep cheese production in my home state - whoopie!!  Even if it was about cheese, at least it wasn't about the cows... ::)

As someone who has never been in a brothel .... honest! .... anywhere in the world, I found the fact that they operate legally in Nevada fascinating, especially the detail of the legal requirements, including the enforced medical!

My complaint is that the whole series is much too rushed. It should be at least twice as long. As is clear from the comments in this topic, much that might be of interest to the viewer is simply being skipped over .... a shame!

A future programme, maybe the next one, will no doubt visit Washington State, and if Mount St Helens is not covered I shall be sorely disappointed. Just how has the vegetation and wildlife grown back after the eruption in 1980? Gosh, was it really that long ago?

I really liked last night's episode for the scenery.  :)  What a beautiful country.

Yeah, DH loved the scenery, too, and said he would love to visit that part of the country sometime when we go back....
I love New Mexico, and I thought the piece about the eco-friendly house was really interesting.  I agree the show is way too rushed, some places he doesn't even stop in, or all you see is a desolate highway as he is passing through.  He could go so much more in depth!  Really, one episode for each state would be great and keep the show going for ages.... :)

For anyone who watched the most recent episode: where was the canyon looking bit (which Fry specifically said was not the Grand Canyon)?  There was a scene where they were travelling along the canyon in a boat...  a colleague has asked where that was, and I can't remember because I was only half watching it (multi-tasking) and not paying full attention.

Thanks!

When he was in the boat it was on Lake Powell which is on the UT/AZ border.  Gorgeous country and a part of my home I really miss.

Thanks, my colleague has not visited the USA yet but she is keen.  Lake Powell really inspired her, thanks for confirming that's what she had seen.

whiteknight: a separate thread to generate ideas sounds great - if you start one, I'll send the link to my colleague to inspire her even more!  :)

I loved that hot tub boat!  :D I was thinking "Why don't they have those everywhere?!"

Think about it.  Instead of rowing around a gorgeous lake in Cumbria in a freezing drizzle, try being floated around said lake in a hot tub. :) Suddenly the temperature and drizzle don't matter do they?  Now imagine that same hot tub but with a margarita...

Just watched the last episode tonight! Really good I thought. Amazed that Alaska in 13 times the size of the UK and 3 times the size of France. I just did not know that.

Lifetime aim .... to go to Hawaii sometime .... looks lovely .... but such a long way from the UK.

i think he said 13 x the size of England, not the UK. I thought tonight was the best episode - ditto Hawaii, looks beautiful

i agree, it was a great episode. and i've either lived or visited most of the places! i've lived in seattle and kodiak island (haven't been as far north as barrow, but lived in fairbanks). i've also been to all the hawaiin islands he visited (it's not that far when you travel from the west coast).

He went to San Francisco, Mendocino and Humboldt. He went to China Town for a second where they were making fortune cookies. I don't remember what he did in Mendocino and in Humboldt he went to a coffee house to see a lesbian folk singer and then went on a drug bust to a house where pot was being grown.

As a Southern Californian, I was disappointed that he didn't visit any place south of SF. I actually thought it was a bit strange that he didn't even mention LA, but I have a feeling he wouldn't have had anything nice to say anyway.  :P

The best part of the show, IMO, was Alaska.
