Earring down the sink!
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:58:45 AM »
I dropped a beloved earring down the bathroom sink this morning. Are all UK sinks equipped with U-bends? Looking at the pipes, all I see is one coming horizontally out of the sink and making a right-angle bend downward. But it's a pedestal sink, so I don't know what's going on inside.

Is there any hope, or is it gone forever?

You could try taking the plumbing apart for one (I'm clueless on how to with that or what you ought to do).  Another tip I've previously heard - cover the nozzle of your vacuum with a nylon stocking & try vacuuming the earring back up - but don't electrocute yourself!

They should be.  The trap is usually attached directly to the base of the basin drain, so on a pedestal sink it will be hidden behind the top of the pedestal.

If it's a modern PVC waste system, you'll probably find something like this:

Just unscrew the plastic nuts at each end of the U-bend and it will come away so you can rescue anything from inside.   Older systems will have metal pipes, sometimes with a drain plug at the bottom of the trap itself.

You might find a bottle trap used instead.  At first glance there appears to be no U-bend, but in fact the equivalent trap is formed from a partition inside the unit:

The inside of the domed cap on the bottom actually forms the bottom of the U-bend, and is where small objects will end up (if, as you hope, the force of the water wasn't enough to sweep them right away).   If you have this type of trap, just put a small bowl underneath to catch the water and unscrew the cap from the bottom.

Thanks, Paul! I was hoping you'd show up!  :-* I'll have another look when I get home.

I wasn't running water when I dropped it, so hopefully it will be there. Thankfully it's just silver and shouldn't be damaged.

If no water has been allowed through the drain after you dropped it, then it should be in the trap somewhere.    Good luck!   :)

I wasn't taking any chances--I put the plug in and strapped brown tape across the sink like a crime scene!

Oh, good!  Was it easy to undo the trap?
