Any recommendations on a vehicle shipper?
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:20:56 PM »
Now that I'm here, I'm ready to bring my car over - anyone had any experience with a reasonably priced shipper?

Thanks!

I'm shipping my VW Beetle over with TGAL (Trans Global Auto Logistics - http://www.tgal.us/ ) They had the best combination of price and delivery location (I'm up north, so I really didn't want to go to Southampton or Thamesport). I'm shipping my car RO/RO from Baltimore to Liverpool.  They just picked my car up yesterday (sniff, sniff) but they have been very professional to work with thus far.

I also got a quote from Reindeer Auto (recommended by our moving company, but quite expensive) and Schumachers (recommended somewhere, can't remember where - very reasonable quote but would only ship into Thamesport).

Hi ExJerseyGirl!

I think we discussed this previously - and you love yer car too much to leave it behind!

Could you tell me how much the RORO quote was for you - ballpark !?!

I'm under the terminology of 'Open air' and 'Closed Container' for shipping cars, I presume the RORO is equivalent to 'open air'...

If so, when your car touches down at port for you to pickup, it will be totally FILTHY - fingers crossed, there won't be any damage either - hopefully the quote you have included insurance to cover this possibility. If the company is doing everything, then I'll guess they'll pick up the car RO roll it, off and clean it and inspect it before driving it up north and delivering it to you.

Just comparing figures since 2004 when we bought the F150 Harley over, as I have my eye on a Dodge Challenger at some point!!

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

Sorry it took so long to respond - I just now saw your post!

I got tons of quotes for single container, shared container, and RORO.  My final decision was to ship Bmore to Liverpool, with pickup from my DC area residence, through TGAL.  Cost, including 20k insurance with a $250 deductible, was 1800. I have to pay 100 pounds cash to pickup in Liverpool (note: my husband is covered by SOFA, so we have some benefits wrt customs and whatnot I think). It was explained to me that RORO is not open air like containers on top of the ship, but rather like a car ferry where they are loaded inside (not exposed to salt air, yada yada yada).    For a container to Liverpool (unshared) it was like 2800 I think through TGAL - drop off in Bayonne and pick up from Liverpool.  I got a couple of cheaper quotes to pick up in Southhampton, both RORO and container, but since I am in Harrogate, I didn't want to drive the distance (the cost difference would have been eaten up with gas alone!)

I got a shared container quote from Schumacher for around 1k, I believe, dropping off in Bayonne (I think, I can't remember well) and picking up at Thamesport.  They couldn't get my car to Liverpool, though.

I got a quote from Reindeer Auto Shipping of like 4500 for door to door shipping RORO. They were too expensive, comparatively speaking.

Hope that helps... feel free to PM me; if you do I'll try harder to find those exact quotes.
