Anyone take US guitar amps to the UK?
« on: October 21, 2008, 04:45:24 PM »
My husband has some nice guitar amps that would probably cost twice the price in the UK.  Has anyone taken theirs?  I assume he would need to buy a transformer?

There would be no specific problems for guitar amplifiers beyond the usual power supply issues.   A fair amount of this type of equipment is built for international use, so you might find that some of them already have a voltage selector on the rear panel for 240V use.  Sometimes there is no external switch, but the transformer inside the units can have links strapped for 240V operation easily.

But failing that, they will run from a suitable 240-to-120V stepdown transformer just fine.

I have one electric I left with a friend, and an amp. I sold on the amp before I left because of the coversion of power and weight of the amp. I figure I could put that money towards a new amp over here. Luckily DH has 4 electrics, 1 acoustic, and 1 acoustic nylon so I didn't have to worry about amps pedals leads, etc. I do miss MY guitar and plan on getting it shipped over or retrieving it next time I'm in the area while visiting the states. Seems expensive though :(

That's what I did too, but mine was just cheap and not a nice Marshall or Crate, etc.  Depending on the quality of the amp, it still may be worth bringing over for use with a transformer.  They get expensive!!!!
